Why are matches free?

People underestimate the power of advertising.

Those matches cost almost nothing, here is a place that sells them for about 2 bucks for 50 sleeves

now imagine how much it must cost for a gas station chain, buying millions at a bulk discount. Tack on a few dollars to print a logo and you have an advertisement that someone will carry with them and pull out 20 times, for direct usage with one of your most profitable items (tobacco products).

Matches are so cheap that the time spent ringing them up would be a loss, unless the markup was extreme.

Could have sworn that once long ago I was helping a friend at work and we unpacked a box of cigarette cartons than game with a couple boxes of matchbooks inside it. They were included from the vendor when buying the cartons wholesale.

Like I said before, most matches are just blank. The only place they arent is sheetz

To go along with the cigarettes you're paying for I guess.

You were never a smoker were you.

I always made sure I had a book or two in my car just in case my lighter died and I was fiending

This. Or when you have 10 lighters at home when your lighter dies and you don't want to buy another one to smoke one cigarette on the way home.
