who's bright idea was it to start wearing ties???

ties are fucking great you savages

also get a tie clip/ keep your suit coat or blazer buttoned op

tie were intended to be used as a rope or tourniquet incase of emergencies imo

hmm, never thought of that, Kophens. That is pretty cool.

Thankfully, I don't have to wear a suit and tie at my new job. I gave my best Charvet tie away to my brother.

I have heard the theroy they are to protect your white shirt from drips and shit when your eating...thus the strong patterns and colors.

The real purpose is that, if your job gets to be unbearable, you can use it to strangle yourself to death.

Work requires dress shirts. Ties aren't mandatory but I wear one anyways, I hate the look of a tucked in dress shirt without a tie, you look like a restaurant worker.

I prefer the puffy look myself.

Love the thread title. I wish I had an answer for you. I like wearing ties but I can't seem to get them long enough.
I either have a super short small end or a wide end that doesn't come down far enough.

Tuxedo's are awesome too and they were created in the United States just northwest of NYC. Tuxedo was the name of the native american tribe that inhabited that region, which was the name of the city it was designed in.

America, fuck yea!

i want to say croatians.

some french king turned it into a big deal though.

Tie are actually based on cravats, which were popular neckwear among European aristocrats in the 18th and 19th centuries. Eventually, the trend went towards wearing thinner cravats with simpler knots, eventually becoming known as tie.

Cravats themselves were based upon scarves wore by Croatian mercenaries to show rank. Eventually, the French adopted them for fashion.

You did say you wanted to know whose idea it was, right?

Personally, I think a suit looks naked without some kind of neckwear, and even though I'm happy about the resurgence of bow ties, regular ties are the easiest to pull off for most people.

EDIT: and bolo ties just need to fuck off

ties are cool, i should wear them more often

Regardless of their origin, the modern tie literally 'ties' (no pun intended) the look of an outfit together; it helps cut the lines and color(s) of the shirt underneath and plays contrast to the other elements of the ensemble, helping boost the overall aesthetic of the outfit.
