who's bright idea was it to start wearing ties???

Work requires dress shirts. Ties aren't mandatory but I wear one anyways, I hate the look of a tucked in dress shirt without a tie, you look like a restaurant worker.

Well since you bring it up why do we have to tuck our shirts in? What's so cool about the upper parts of my pants that my shirt has to be tucked away so that its visible?

Who had the audacity to say "the lower part of the shirt should be hidden from the rest of the world"

Ties and tucking go hand in hand when it comes to retardation, just cut the shirt so it can be worn untucked and no thanks ill keep my leash at home not around my neck

What's the purpose of these things?! I have to wear one every day at work and I hate them. It's supposed to be professional and classy and blah blah blah when you get down to it its just a long piece of fabric that serves no purpose.

The damn thing flails in the wind, gets shut in drawers and basically makes me a walking bulls eye for the scranton strangler.

Completely useless imo.

I have to wear one to work too... they are pretty lame and pointless

Ties are badass. Life is short. Have some style.

I love neck ties.I shame I don't have the occasion to wear them as often as I used to.They look great.TS just wishes he worked in a gen-xer run software company.

Hey if i didn't have to wear a tie why not

It's cause in ancient times servants and slaves wore nooses around their necks with a little bit of tail-end hanging from it. Whenever a superior wanted to abuse or command a servant or slave the neck noose was grabbed to choke the servant...

Basically you're a slave to the corporations. The big money pimps at the top laugh at how the peons still wear the noose.

Croatia is to blame for modern neckties.

basically, Croat soldiers (mercenaries) wore them. Their wifes/girlfriends would give them the long piece of cloth/silk to wear when escorting them to wars. More of a scarf than a regular tie (as we know it now).
By wearing the thing, soldiers would show their loyalty to the said woman.

Low grade materials were used for regular soldier, while more expensive materials were used for higher ranking officers.
In 17th century, the french noticed the trend, and started practicing it. The name "cravat" was given.

Eventually, king Charles II spread the trend to England.

it spread from there on.
