Jesse Holland (MMAmania.com): What is you contract status with the UFC?

James Irvin: I have one more fight on my contract after this fight (with Silva) so usually we start negotiating after that. I'm sure it will weigh in my favor that they had four people turn down this fight with Anderson before I accepted.

Jesse Holland (MMAmania.com): Wait a second, four people were offered this fight and said no?

James Irvin: I was very surprised myself and to be honest I was kind of let down by one or two of the names. I thought they would have done very well in this fight.

Rashad Evans turned down Andy. Who were the other 3 LHWs that said no?

I think Rashad would have beat Andy

Nah.

Remember that this Rashad was about 3 months from fighting Chuck. At the time his last fight was that really piss poor performance vs Bisping.

I love Rashad and think that his 2011 version stands a good shot but his 2008/2009 version fell in love with striking too much to beat Anderson and the 2007 version didn’t really have good stand up except for that one Kick vs Salmon.

rashad and andy were supposed to go in like 2013 before weidman came along but shad lost to lil nog, which back then was a big deal since u didnt get title shots off of a loss very often. i recall edgar off the top of my head but the bendo fights were disputable decisions. evans had lost a 3 round UD to lil nog, wasnt even a title fight or anything. so they wouldnt book the fight. nowadays that wouldnt matter at all and we would have gotten that fight plus others like aldo/penn most likely

to answer the question i dont know who the other 2 would be, maybe rampage is one of them? dana hated tito i could see them offering it to tito

I believe Tito was out of the UFC at this time.

Rampage was champion at the time the fight was booked and Forrest was #1 contender (fight happened two weeks before Irvine/Silva) so both are out.

W. Silva is an option, so is Shogun. Possibly Jardine though he had just been killed by Wand.

wasn't machida one of them? Seems like I remember Dana being mad at Andy and Machida not wanting to fight because they were training partners.

ah, wand for sure i bet was one. maybe jardine. keith was wierd, you never knew if he was gonna get ass blasted in the first round or he'd end up winning vs a top guy. that rampage fight was close as well, plus he ko'd griffin and beat chuck. but then he got wrecked by thiago, wanderlei and houston lol.

i recall that as well, that was later on tho i think like 09-2010 ish i think

If I had to guess I’d say the four were:

Rashad
Wand
Soko (coming off the Machida loss)
Jardine

The other top ten fighters that didn’t make sense were:

Rampage (champ when fight was booked)
Forrest (#1 contender when fight was booked)
Machida - unlikely to ask due to being training partners
Chuck - Injured (had just pulled out of fight with Rashad, out til Sept)
Shogun - Injured (had just pulled out of fight with Chuck, didn’t return until Jan)
Tito - free agent at that point.

Rashad, Lyoto, Rampage, and Wandy if I remember correctly.

Silva was highly feared at the time and his wrestling wasn't quite as exposed yet.

Rashad- Great fight... Anderson would have probably KOed him but maybe not
Wand - Anderson would have murked him
Sokodjou- Absolutely annihilated
Jardine- my god not a fair fight.. love Keith. but man his poor chin couldnt handle that accuracy

It was actually:

Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva, Keith Jardine and Brandon Vera.
