Might be a good time for Volkanovski to move up and take a fun fight at LW like Anderson used to do.

Wait what? what happen to max?

Also had no interest in a third fight between them, i voted for Giga if he wins. If not then Emmet.

My preference of who should get offered the title shot if they are gonna keep Volkanovski on the March card

  1. Giga Chikadze (if he defeats Kattar)
  2. Korean Zombie
  3. Josh Emmett

So an answer that isn’t possible is correct ….. hmmmm
None of the UFC options should replace Max; none of them has earned a title shot or rates to be an interesting match-up. Also, the world is abundant with examples of things that people should make happen but never do; that something won't happen is not indicative of whether it should happen. A world where McKee substitutes for Holloway is a better world for fight fans than a world involving any other substitution or dropping the fight. It absolutely should happen from the non-casual MMA fan point of view.

Perfect time for Cejudo. No clear #1 contender and that's the best time to do a fun fight.

Giga has a good case if he wins. Part of me would like to see Zombie get it but short notice title fights rarely work out.

Off that list…

1. Giga Chikadze - He’d be on an 8 fight win streak with a couple top 10 wins.

2. Josh Emmett - Gonna toss his name in the hat. 4 fight win streak, several ranked wins.

3. Korean Zombie - Coming off a win at least. But is 3-2 in his last 5.

4. Yair Rodriguez- He looked good in defeat but he’s coming off loss nonetheless. I’m never in favor of rewarding losses.

5. Henry Cejudo -He hasn’t fought in nearly two years and never at 145. Fight is somewhat interesting but I’m tired of the weight class jumping and jumping the line. I also wouldn’t be confident he’d stick around, delegitimizing the belt should he win it.

Yair? Where is pink suit guy? It's 2022. The last time Yair won a fight was 2019.

Yair's last 5 fights stretch all the way back to May 2017. In those 5 fights, his record is 2-2 with a no contest.

6th-ranked Josh Emmett should get it. He is on a 4-fight winning streak. He only has 2 losses in his entire MMA career, one of which was a split decision. The weigh-ins for UFC 272 take place on his 37th birthday.

This situation is the perfect platform for discussing how title shots should be handled.

Some want the most interesting fight, some want the most threatening challenger, some see it as a reward that should be given out based on the best body of work or the most loyal worker bee, and to others it’s black and white and boils down entirely to the win/loss column.

I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer but I probably lean towards a combination of what will be most interesting fight and who will offer the stiffest challenge to the champion.

As a result I lean away from Emmett here, as I think he’s too basic to make a fight with Volk exciting or close. I’ve watched him get outboxed by Michael Johnson for the better part of 15 minutes and slog through competitive decision wins with very hittable guys like Ige and Burgos. If a guy like that knocks off Ortega and Max and kicks the down door, sure, you’ve gotta give it to him. But in a situation with no clear option it’s a pass for me.

Yair is interesting. Ultimately I agree with you that there’s gotta be more winning in there to get a title shot, but I think he’s closer than many are acting. I don’t think there are many guys who can take Max to the edge like that, and he offers a much different look than Volk has faced as champ.

If Giga massacres Kattar and looks better than ever, that would be enough for me to put him ahead of Yair and Emmett. If Zabit proves he’s healthy in a win I would give it to him above all of them.

But ultimately this looks like a time that they need to look outside the ordinary course of business. Yan, Cejudo, Oliveira or one of the top lightweight names if they could make 145, even Aldo if they hadn’t already fought and it hadn’t been boring.

Regardless of what they choose, I don’t think this is the time for orthodox thinking (not accusing any poster of that, just saying that all doors should be open here).

You know what, I like this idea a lot better than forcing another inappropriate title fight. We’ve had enough Dan Hardy, Thales Leites and Patrick Cote title challenges for one lifetime.

The beauty of this suggestion is that it could be against almost anyone.

I can't take this gimmick seriously

I know he's a beast in the cage but everything he does aside from fighting is ultimate cringe

I'm not a fan of the gimmick stuff either but I try to ignore that stuff. He's pretty incredible when he's actually fighting. I want to see him be given the chance to get the third belt. He actually defended both of his belts and never avoided a fight. He deserves the opportunity more than anyone else.

Get him in there.
Taking volk on after that long of a layoff is a dangerous fight
I'd watch it.
