IMO, modern MMA history exists in two segments thus far.
Pre-TUF (my preference) and Post-TUF.

It has been over 10 years since the TUF premiere.

Who is the one fighter that has been at the top and also had the personality to most influence modern MMA during this time?

There is only one answer to this.
Far behind him, there is no one.

1. Fought for 3 UFC Championships. Dominated MW champ for 4 1/2 rounds and was 2 minutes away from having the belt. Was seconds away from handing Jones a defeat and taking the LHW belt. Jones even shied away from the first fight offer against Sonnen to properly prepare for a fighter of that caliber, despite the fact that Sonnen was much smaller than Jones.
2. Had amazing BJJ. Was the first fighter to submit Shogun Rua.
3. Showed that TRT and HGH could be used to positive effect in MMA and that the key was not to abuse them.
4. Got a gig with ESPN quite easily after his dismissal from FOX. Was dismissed for HGH use AS AN ATHLETE, while his broadcasting partner is still at FOX after PLAGIARIZING.
5. Defeated Yushin Okami, Brian Stann, Nate Marquardt, Dan Miller, Michael Bisping, and Shogun Rua. Also defeated the legendary Wanderlei Silva in an unsanctioned match.
6. Changed weight classes casually, the way we might change into a different t-shirt.
7. He excelled at the world class level in MMA while also selling real estate and having political aspirations.
8. Still, by far, the most commanding personality in the MMA world. When Uncle Chael speaks, everyone listens.
9. Founding member of notorious West Linn, Oregon gang.
10. His fearlessness transcended weight class. Once, he famously called out the powerful Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva for a fight.

C'mon ladies, give a hand to Chael Sonnen. The personality and fighter who has most dominated the spotlight in American MMA since the first airing of TUF.

He's still more talked about than 90% of fighters and he retired 4+ years ago.

sonnen will always be remembered as the guy who almost beat anderson silva
jon jones will be remembered as the greatest of all time

also ronda and conor hate aside, they brought mma to another level of exposure. mma has never been as popular as it is today and i don't think any sane person would dismiss ronda/conor as reasons for it. that's pretty influential i guess

"influential" is a term that wont be understood correctly since its not defined in the thread. my view is that "influential" means a guy who other fighters pattern their approach after. jones or anderson silva are bad examples because they have tools that other fighters simply dont have. you cant be "influential" if you are the only guy with an 84" reach.

with that in mind, GSP is the most influential post-TUF fighter. he showed that athleticism, rather than toughness or heart, is the most important quality in an MMA athlete, because at the end of the day, MMA is a sport, rather than a real fight.

GSP shaped the modern art of point fighting, or fighting not to lose. there are a ton of guys today that have that style, whereas most pre-TUF fighters had a kill-or-be-killed approach. GSP isnt the first great wrestler in MMA, but he was really the first high-level guy who used wrestling to run out the clock. guys like tito, couture, coleman, hughes etc would try to finish, do damage from top. you dont see as many wrestling-oriented fighters trying to finish as much these days. some would argue this is because grappling cancels grappling, which couture once pointed. but its also a cardio-first kind of approach to MMA. do enough to win rounds, but not so much that you get tired or make a mistake. GSP pioneered this approach which many fighters today seem to emulate.

Kenny Florian has more credentials than Sonnen if we're going off of championship losses and weight classes they've fought in.

And being a plagiarizer.

Nobody influences the outcome of more fights than this guy.

Most influential is gsp and it isn't even close.
Look at every single champ besides Werdum and it is clearly obvious.

THIS. Brock will always be the biggest star UFC ever had, PPV numbers were proof of that, still the biggest PPV ever he headlined.
