Gary Oldman by far.

Despite that performance, I'm gonna have to settle on old PSH [FROM THIS LIST].

Jason "The Chameleon" makes both clowns look like one-trick ponies.

Tom Hanks wins this in a landslide... Jamie Fox is a really good mention too. More talented than everyone on that list besides Hanks. He can do comedy, sing, dance, play the tough guy, the hero, the villain. Only thing I’ve never seen him do well is be a romantic leading man.
And I know DDL, Bale, and Penn have their fans but they either don’t work enough or don’t take on varied enough roles to qualify as being the most versatile. Gotta at least be able to do comedy.

Yeah, there seems to be a real snobbery when comparing dramatic roles vs comedic roles.

The predominantly comedic actors tend to fair way better at dramatic roles than vice versa.

It's why I view Phillip Seymour Hoffman so highly. He nailed the comedy when he had to.

The divide people look to make is increasingly out of date as well considering mixing comedy and drama has become more and more common.

Richard E Grant - Withnail and I
Bill Murray - Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation
Jeff Bridges - The Fisher King and True Grit
Jim Carrey - Truman and Eternal Sunshine
Colin Farrell - In Bruges and The Lobster
Brendan Gleeson - The Guard and Calvary
Sam Rockwell - Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards
Joaquin Phoenix - Her and Inherent Vice

Yup, I like DDL as much as the next guy, and he is great at what he does, but I can't really see him doing those type of roles, tbh.

*not sure Joaquin belongs on that list, tbf.

He's mostly done dramatic roles but Inherent Vice especially is an excellent comic role, I think Gosling pulled off the same with the similarly Lebowskish Nice Guys.

Was going to say, still not seen Inherent Vice......been on my to watch list for about 5 years.

PSH was one of the the few actors for who I’d hear described with superlatives like genius were it didn’t immediately make my eyes roll into the back of my head. He was brilliant. Kind of like Robin Williams, he could be vulnerable, charming, and fucking terrifying from one moment to the next. Such an intelligent— or should I say classy actor too, which is rare for an American.

If you like Lebowski definitely worth it, a more spaced out and paranoid take on that kind of film, Brolin is very good in it as well playing deadpan comedy.

I do think you definitely have a tendency for rather bland actors to get praise in Oscar baitish roles that look to play off of some pre existing weight(biopics, issue films, etc). Real charisma is much more likely to cross over into comedy well.

1. Gary oldman
2. Robin Williams don't know why he hasn't been mention yet.
3.
Joaquin Phoenix

4.Dustin Hoffman

5. Will Smith

Did you guys know 3 out of the 5 highest voted actors on here were born in 1974?

Christian Bale
Joaquin Phoenix
Leonardo DiCpario

What a year to give birth to those 3 fantastic actors. I don't think that's ever happen before or after.
