Really? Is this what we can expect from the HW champion ? Head up hands down chasing a heavy hitter?

That was absolute crap and proves how poor the striking is in MMA today .

I hate the argument : anything can happen in the HW Division. Werdum lost due to ignoring the very basic principles of striking . So did Aldo btw and it does happen way too often in MMA without an improving trend emerging.

i hope something is gonna trigger a change soon cozy this is horrible to watch.

funniest thing Ive heard in the last couple of weeks in the run up was that Werdum had world class striking......... got flamed for saying he didnt. He has looked better but he looked like an amatuer last night

Lol

training with wanderlei silva, of course. I noticed alot of fighters in that camp do alot of the same shit. Shogun, silva do the exact same thing time after time. They have good muay thai but lack of fundamental boxing skill.

He said he just got over excited and I believe him. His striking may not be world class but it's pretty good, which he showed against Cain. Fighting is often very much in the head but you don't get punished for being in the wrong frame of mind as much in your local dojo.

His striking looked good against guys with striking ability. Allow me to reference his Strikeforce fight w/ Overeem if you want to see an example of his striking vs. strikers. The difference is vs. Overeem he knew he couldn't win a stand up battle with him. In his fight with Miocic, he had false confidence in his stand up. He charged and competent boxer and look at the result. His striking is decent but it isn't great and last night is what happens when you forget the difference.

That was hardly a good display of muay thai either. Muay thai is mostly about keeping distance with low kicks and teeps, not rushing to box.
And using the clinch when a boxer gets close.

Cordeiro and chute boxe guys have good a good clinch game but they love bum rushing with hooks.

It's like you've never watched any of his other fights. ..
He KOd Hunt and beat the snot out of Cain before submitting him. Tactical errors made in one fight don't erase the other shit you've done. I guess Aldo is an amateur as well under your logic.

Werdum's striking is fine, not elite, but good. He actually had a good reason for what he did. If you notice right before his bumrush he "wobbled" Stipe a bit with his punches.

He probably thought the end was near and went for the kill, but Stipe wasn't as hurt as he looked -- if he was hurt at all. Might have acted a little wobby to bait Werdum.

Werdum bullrushed looking for the kill, not realizing Stipe was still very dangerous.

I think it's harsh to say he has terrible striking or amateur striking because of that one moment.

He was clipped and tried to "get one back", made a silly mistake and chased him. It's like the shot he was hit with rocked him, and he went back to old habits. It was very similar to him vs. Arlovski back in the old days.

Werdum has very good striking, and he's shown that against some of the best MMA fighters in the world. He was caught rushing, and embarrassed himself to be frank.

I don't hear anyone doubting dos Santos/Arlovski's striking after taking beatings from Miocic.

Werdum will be back, but this is a major step back in the twilight of his career.

Someone mentioned it yesterday in another thread. Brazilians think boxing is Muay Thai without kicking. It's not (especially considering punches are scored the weakest in Muay Thai competition). It's it own discipline. Learn it or face the consequences.

Funny is almost like Stipe pulled a Werdum on Werdum.

his striking only looked decent in that fight because he would flop to the ground anytime Alistair landed something good. then get back up and land some shots, Alistair would land again and he would flop to the floor.

if he just stood with Alistair like he did with Stipe he wouldve got sparked just like he did last night

Agreed completely, that's how Werdum got successful with his recent striking improvement by using good muay thai. But lastnight he displayed the legendary chute box style boxing technique and got faceplanted.

Exactly this. The replays all start after the wobbly leg which makes Werdum look retarded but it was just a tactical mistake.
