I used to love the articles sherdog would write about old mma vets and what they are up to now. One fighter they did that stuck out to me was Brian Johnson. I remember seeing the guy fight when I was younger and thinking how bad ass he was despite not being able to beat the top names in the sport back then (Frye, Coleman & Shamrock).
Unfortunately the guy suffered a massive stroke and seems quite solemn now. It wasn’t a very feel good story for the guy that helped make AKA what it is today.

Paul "the head hunter" Buentello

still top 5 bellator HW as far as I know

Igor Vovchanchyn...where is he?

wht happened to that guy who subbed in during the last fight and won the tournament that way, think he was a cop?

Bellator? I remember him starching Eric Prindle pretty good recently then getting recked by Goltsov in his next fight. He still has those fast hands though!

I consider bellator as any non UFC contracted fighter. Yeah man, for a big fat latino, he had great speed!

I believe you’re referring to Steve Jennum, the guy who beat the boxer Melton Bowen. I’d like to know what happened to him as well!

yeah just googled it that was his name.. been a long long time since i saw that, prolly was in like 7th grade

I remember that, Big John roughed him up a little jumping in. Guy was jacked lol..
Big John broke his nose... That' why he's angry.

Dude didn't take a single strike, then has his nose busted by the ref's forearm.

BJM was really heavy handed back in the day. He wanted to be a fighter deep down, and almost entered UFC 1 but was denied because he was a Gracie fighter and would have owned Royce... Dude was bitter for a long time... He also wrote the rules to MMA and hardly got paid shit.

This is always the scene I think about when I think of Johnson. Also him rag dolling some poor guy then head butting him. The guy was scary back then.
Oh, there was no doubt he was a beast, scary mother fucker for sure.

Interesting take. My personal opinion on this is was all about fighter safety. I read interviews where he states in early UFC's he wasn't allowed to intervene. He said only the fighters corners' could throw in the towel or something to that effect and he had a huge problem with it and worked to get that changed. It's always been about safety with him and I just can't see him being intentionally rough out of some pent up frustration. He was jumping in to save the guy and busted Johnston's nose accidentally. It looks like Johnston was immediately pissed, (rightfully so) started lipping off so Big John pushed him away.
