It always sucks.
He was good as a wrestler, but when he shows up and just cuts a promo, it sucks.

Vs Edge and Orton was great, and even as a heel in ECW in 2006 was fun too.

But for the most part you're right, he's there for a cheap pop or plug one of his side gigs. I can never hate the guy for what he's contributed.

If you watch his early matches as Mankind its just fucking brutal. The bumps he takes are insane especially at that point in his long career. Add the chairshots to the head and it's hard to watch.

With all due respect to Mick Foley for all the physical abuse hes endured over his career. I've never really been a fan. I'm sure he is a great person off camera too but I just never got into his gimmick.. Especially later in his career after he gave up the mankind character. I never found anything he did to be funny and none of his matches after royal rumble 1999 were entertaining.. And even that match was only good because of the rock. I'm sure attitude era fans worship Mick Foley but I am not turned on by the over the top violence that he was famous for. I'm a big fan of laddar matches/tables/chair shots/getting tossed through walls/etc.. But getting wrapped up in barbed wire and slammed on nails and glass is just over the top and gross.

I love Foley as much as the next guy but lets face it, the guy took punishment but wasn't much of a wrestler. With all the violence gone what would he really do in another match? Not much...

Good point.. He took some serious abuse to put over heel characters multiple times. I don't think anybody in the history of pro wrestling has gotten destroyed as viciously as mick foley. He has silenced the crowd building undertaker, rock, and orton as heels.

The "Mick Foley Special Appearance" Promo Formula

- Start of jovial, self depreciating and fun
- Obligatory cheap pop, followed by a thumbs up
- Warns the guy in the ring about what he is getting himself into
- Guy in the ring basically says "Pffft fuck off, Mick."
- Foley gets enraged and screams "NO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!"
- Foley then reels off a list of things to do with the thing they're talking about AND THEN SCREAMS A STATEMENT TO PUNCTUATE IT.
- Then gets calm and serious, to underscore the gravity of what is looming


Then you can go into two different, either, the guy he's talking to goes to attack him, and the babyface du jour makes the save. Or, he leaves, whilst the guy he's talking to is having everything dawn on him, and whilst he's walking away, Michael Cole says "Strong words from WWE Hall of Famer, Mick Foley".

To be fair it's not just Foley that sucks when they come back.. Stone Cold, Hogan, HBK, Flair, Piper even. Austin has even said they're pretty heavily handcuffed and don't get the chance to make it interesting.

It's nice to see them, and I'm sure if they had more input they could turn the appearance into something awesome.. but fuck are they ever wasted when they come back.

I'm sure Foley is rusty when he comes out, but he's a pretty legendary promo guy. I'd love to see what he could do if they just let him go.

The problem is he can't come back as Cactus Jack or Mankind at this point. He just comes back as Mick Foley and does his tongue-in-cheek "cheap pop" thing and it's gotten really old at this point.

This is coming from someone who is a huge Foley fan as well.
