I can remember the K1 series being the most playable kickboxing game ever made with Incredible combos, counter timing and realistic hit detection but it seems like the next gen consoles have completely abandoned kickboxing as a theme!

I would expect kickboxing to make a big come back one day with all the MMA hype WTF

I just put the old ones on the ps classic, since there'll probably never be another awesome kickboxing game.

I wish it wasn't such a niche thing. If we can't get decent boxing or wrestling games anymore there's probably no hope.

Don't worry, they will make a "stand up" game option in one of the MMA titles!

All the k1 games were AWESOME

There was an early european kickboxing game called Andre pannza kickboxing ...it was a great 2d fighter!

I always wonder if the K1 game for PS2 was as good as I remembered or if it aged poorly. It felt damn near perfect at the time and I haven't felt that way since about a fighting game. KO'ing guys with Mirko's LHK, breaking legs with Hoost, and flying with Bonjasky felt so damn good.

I would be grateful for another Fight Night game at this point. UFC has been a total bust.

Ps 2 was the last console to feature a kickboxing game!

It may be an abandoned genre!

When Kickboxing promotions are struggling to maintain profitability running events they're not going to invest an incredible amount of money into making video games. K-1 in Japan right now is a much different scaled down promotion that is just starting to grow bigger events (K'Festa). It's a completely different landscape they don't have the same financial backing and Glory wouldn't either.

I have K1 world grand prix on the ps2 it's one of the best fighting games I've ever played only thing I don't like is the long ass loading times lol

This doesn't make any sense to me ...

with the incredible effectiveness of kickboxing being proven in the MMA ring as opposed to the days when they believed BJJ was the end-all-be-all martial art, why in the heck is kickboxing struggling so much in popularity?

Because the situation is a lot more complicated than that.

The 1990s was the decade for international kickboxing...

I think it all started off in 1988 when Rick roufus got leg kicked ko'd by Changpuek.

then 1989 changed the world again with Jean-Claudes kickboxer movie introducing Muay Thai to American audiences

in 1992 Dennis alexio was smoked by Stan Longinidis (broke his leg with a low kick)...

I was running a PKA style kickboxing Club which quickly adopted leg kicking and knees after those two fights introduced Americans to International rules kickboxing...

Then in 1993 k1 was created and took off like a rocket ship with pay-per-view audiences and video games...

I really believe kickboxing had finally attained a level of respect that we could be proud of.

Even Billy Blanks who never had a single kick boxing bout was on TV with his tae bo series.

now here we are today and we're seeing Muay Thai kickboxing proving itself as the ultimate striking art in The MMA world and somehow it has become less popular than it was in the 90s WTF!

As awesome of a sport as kickboxing is and how great it translates to video games and here we are today and all we have to show for it is sagot in the street fighter series LOL

A few have mentioned boxing games in here, the big problem is, how do you get a fighter who earns millions each fight, to sign an agreement to be in a video game, where is the benefit unless they make the fighter unbeatable?

It certainly sucks as a game fan, but i an see why it would cost so much trying to acquire current fighters to sign up.

Oh, and nostalgia, i used to love the K1 PS2 game, i also adored Victory Boxing(the first one) and going back even further, the best games of my childhood were:

and then this gem came along

I would love another boxing game without a shitty story, just make your way up the rankings and fight the best.....

Because people would rather watch a cage fight. More appealing than just kickboxing - for the same reason as boxing I guess...too many titles, too many promotions. Glory is trying to bring it all together but it won't happen.

Kickboxing IS big in other markets like China, Japan, and various parts of Europe.

Apparently it's not big enough to even produce a single kick boxing game since ps2... which is pretty bad you must admit!

Also the ultimate irony is that video games are produced primarily in Asia and Europe where kickboxing is the most popular however they still gave up on the sport!

we've had these yet kickboxing has been abandoned entirely

There isn't a promotion currently persueing it. Game developers don't just come knocking on their door asking to make a game. Kazuyoshi Ishii who founded K-1 pushed for the K-1 games and even featured himself in it. When he sold K-1 to FEG they stopped producing video games, despite how massive they continued to be for years before FUJI TV pulled out and we ended up in this rebuilding phase.

Popularity has nothing to do with it. Boxing is still immensely popular globally and their hasn't been a new Boxing game in 8 years.

well it doesn't have to be a K1 licensed game... any kickboxing title would do just fine... I didn't know there hasn't been a new boxing game in 8 years that's pretty sad.

Seems to be fighting games are getting more cartoonish where as the First Street Fighters actually featured artistic representations of real martial arts with some fantasy elements

These days they've gone way off the deep end now and go straight into full cartoon Dragon ball mode!

I can't believe none of the MMA games feature a stand-up only option!

honestly I think even the "mature" games are marketed (in a clandestine fashion)
to males ages 5 to 15.

It's not as easy these days to produce a game, they didnt need motion capture and all that shit back then...now if it's going to be done well they'd need to pay a ton of kickboxers for their likeness and use them for motion capture and shit most likely. Expensive.

There are stand-up only modes in UFC 3, you can play it online against people unranked, pretty fun but not great.

I think kickboxings ship has sailed...its decade was the 90ties.

also the industry is less adventurous than it used to be.

big industry monopolies, everything is starting to play the same...GTA clone openworld trope garbage
