...it sparks a melange of criticism from the most cynical and relatively new/uneducated fight fans.
"He/she's over the hill, they were never good, overrated, terrible camp, training wrong, need new coaches, etc"

When champions lose, or when anyone loses, they are left with options. Sit out and sulk, call it a career... or take that loss in stride and use it as fuel to improve upon their game.

We've seen both ends of the spectrum, but the ones we pay attention to are the ones who follow the latter.

Max Holloway was a very young talented fighter, who just happened to cross paths with a future champ champ, and another up and coming fighter. He could've complained and spent his time arguing with losers on twitter, but instead he got back on the horse and now he's wearing the strap.

UFC Calgary, we'll see three former champs still on that grind, still on that beast mode living out their dreams ... and we'll be tuning in to follow their journey.
I personally see the fight game that way. You're following the journey of someone pursuing a life goal...

How many of us are part of that .001% that chase their dreams to the fullest?
Realizing this myself makes the fight game even more amusing. Not to mention I like martial arts in general, the amount of intel we're able to see of a fighter's life just makes it that much more exciting.

I'm a Conor fan, but wayyy before that, I was a Jose fan and still am. Really looking forward to see where Jose's mind is at, where his skills are at.
Joanna, touted as invincible at a time, coming off of two losses... I'm not wasting any of my time talking shit about her. She's one of the most technical fighters on the roster and it's a thing of beauty.
Eddie. Maybe ya'll forgot, or just joined MMA later in life, but Eddie was involved in multiple fights that will be in the top 20 fights... ever. He's won titles after titles after titles... and he's still on it.

Souped for this card. Let's go!

Stephens finishing Aldo would be sad, even for Aldo haters.

Tornado could arguably fight for the title now so it will be more normal if she wins, but still Joanna was so dominant not too long ago.

stephens lost to moicano 1 year ago...won against emett who rushed thorugh rankings because he Ko'd Lamas who took him on short notice, and Emett missed weight, it's most signifcant win of Stephens...
Torres fought 2 top 5 fighters and lost, lost Andrade like 3 months ago and got boring fight agains Waterson, I don't know how the hell she deserves title shot, let's not forget she is 1-1 against Namajunas, but she lost in UFC against her.

Is it casual hour again?

MMA is the most unforgiving sport ever and most of these guys dont make the money they deserve.

Yes, Stephens has been doing well but it’s not about that. It’s about how Aldo was so dominant for a decade or so. The thought of him losing wasn’t even possible until Conor.

" youre as good as your last fight" mantra plays to this sport like literally (in the minds of keyboard warriors- like I said just flat out unforgiving)

haha, it's been on my list of words to use for a minute.

found the perfect opportunity.

I don't know, have you seen Eddie Alvarez's house?
Houses in Jersey aren't exactly cheap...

Is it something new in combat sports? Champions will lose at some point. Eddie, Aldo, Joanna even if they will lose this time, they still got like around 80-90% win ratio their whole fighting careers, without padded records etc.
Eddie will have hardest job, if Aldo or Joanna will lose they should rethink their careers, because both are basicly set up for future, and what is point of being gatekeeper.
Aldo/Eddie/Joanna talking about belts because it keeps them motivated.

Yes, that would depend on how much Aldo has declined, which we still don’t know.

All fighters are sh*t on after a loss, just like all fighters are the goat after a win.
Aldo is a shell of himself. I believe it's a mental thing.
Joanna is still a delusional mess thinking she's still the champ.
Being in great battles =\= a great fighter. Eddie is a solid fighter that gets hit a lot. His UFC run has been meh to me.

If Aldo loses to Stephens it confirms Conor took his soul. A couple years ago this matchup would be laughable and Jeremy would be smashed.

People call Aldo done but I think Max is just a lot better than him. He looked good against Edgar the second time when people thought he was done. If he loses this weekend though he's for sure declining.

Max can't make weight for lightweight bout...

As much as I think Jeremy is overrated, can't deny him a Crack at Aldo. Dude kept it up and slowly but surely made himself a viable fighter.

Think who the fook is that guy comment lit a fire in his bunyan
