You need to look at why they invaded and what was going on at the time, your talking about a totally different animal, comparing the Soviet Union then and the Russia today..... They a super power put 10 years into trying to hold that land, against people backed by Pakistan, US, China, Iran, UK and the Arab states...... Look at that line up and you think that wasn't important....

From a historical point of view alone Afghanistan is far more important..... Ukraine isn't defendable and you can just go around it.....
