When’s the last time you cared about flyweight?

I’ve liked it since the opening tournament, but where as I was a fan of DJ, others HATED him. Like years and years of really nasty stuff, with very minimum defence or support.

Figueiredo has had four finishes in his past four fights. Three of those were in the first round.

Only natural you are excited to see him.

I’m doing some introspection and trying to figure out why I never really cared about Demetrius Johnson but I really really like Fig. And Brandon Moreno for that matter. What is the difference? Maybe it’s because Fig is just more violent? More KO power?

DJ got put into a place of it didn't matter what he did right in the cage. He KO'd a better version of Benavidez both faster and more violently than Figueiredo, but it just didn't matter. Nothing did.

For you personally, I think it might come down to a few things.

One is simply that you might enjoy charisma and personality more than in cage technique and skill. There's a reason Conor and Brock were huge stars, where as guys like DJ and Aldo weren't. Figueiredo and Moreno lean closer to the former. Great selling personalities.

Secondly is that the more intriguing opponents kept losing.

Instead of getting
Demetrious Johnson vs. John Lineker...
Lineker lost so we got...
Demetrious Johnson vs. Ali Bagautinov

Instead of getting
Demetrious Johnson vs. Ian McCall III...
McCall lost so we got...
Demetrious Johnson vs. Kyoji Horiguchi

Neither of those opponents spoke english.

Brandon Moreno would have been a terrific opponent for DJ. So would have Sergio Pettis or Justin Scoggins. But they couldn't breakthrough the competition.

Out of one of the greatest seasons in TUF history... stuffed full of amazing talent came... Tim Elliott. The bracket just worked out that way.

It was just like DAMN IT... DJ is facing some incredible guys, but the matchmaking just not turning out.

Even Ben Nguyen was a viral internet sensation at one point but then nope. Loses on his win streak.

Paddy Holohan gets the opportunity to main event in Ireland... but Nope, slips up in front of a waiting to roar crowd.

Never.
I don't want to see super small guys fight. 135 should be the lowest weight class in the UFC.

For the record we should also ban or force the super sloppy heavyweights to get into
better shape or be cut.

i don’t agree that I care more about charisma. I’ve always found DJ very likable. I do agree that djj in was a victim of circumstance. The circumstances being that the interesting fighters couldn’t get a streak going to earn the title shot. So DJ fought some boring competition.

solid post

Remember when Lucifer Alpha Kept overhyping the flyweight, saying your not real mma fan, If you don’t like Mighty Mouse style.

I was sort of intrigued by the initial tournament and I remember thinking Uncle Creepy's back mount was funny. That was probably the last time.

I can’t figure it out, but I’m suddenly tuned in to flyweight for the first time ever. As in, I actually care what happens In that division.

I mean, I would still watch DJ, but I just didn’t find the fights exciting regardless of how dominant or flashy the wins were. I always felt that his opponents were overmatched....and they were. So there just wasn’t the excitement of DJ maybe losing his title.

then when the king of cringe barely won the title, I was somewhat entertained, but then he moved up in weight so I stopped caring about flyweight again. Now I actually care about flw and hope to see Figgy really make a lasting mark on the division.

help me understand myself sherbros. What do I care? And when’s the last time you cared?
After the cejudo/mm fight, seeing a rubber mat CJ would have been a big deal for me but that was shattered...
Cejudo is still a p4p great and massivly underrated.

I made a point of it to buy DJ's fights. To me, skill-wise, he's definitely in the GOAT debate. And I love what I've seen out of Figgy Smalls so far....

The thing I like about the lighter weight classes is that the probability of watching truly A-level athletes is much higher in my opinion. Think of it this way, in alot of sports, size is a big requirement independent of skill. Yes it's not written in stone, but alot of team sports - North American sports in particular - are geared towards guys with size. Are there exceptions, of course, but by and large size plays a prominent role so naturally this plays to a tendency of athletic guys getting filtered out due to size/durability issues. As a result, there's a greater chance of seeing the higher level athletes at smaller weight classes since they may not have other athletic alternatives.

Take Cody Garbrandt for example, he was a MIDDLE LINEBACKER in Ohio, winning All-State honors and even a 2010 National All-American in spite of the fact that he's small enough to fight at 135 and can make 125. That's an athlete.
