What's Your Next Purchase? V5

My dad's two "bucket list" firearms:

Both are pre-1964 models:
- Model 70 in .270
- Model 70 in .375 H&H

Guess I won't need to buy my own H&H

I'd like to own a pre 64 m70 in 270. When I was younger I read all of jack O'Connors books and would just dream of sheep hunting, that dude shot like 200+ bighorns all over the world over a ~ 54 year period and mainly used a m70 in 270.

That guy's stories is the reason I use a m70 as one of my main rifles, just a big step up from a Remington 700, that flat based receiver is cool.

A few years back, Winchester had a jack O'Connor limited edition rifle in 270 but I didn't have that sort of $$$ in those days and I completely missed out on it.

If I can't find a pre 64 for nostalgia, I may just buy a current model 70 blued sporter in 270 and mount a fixed 6 power scope on it, it would be awesome to get a big show with an old school rig.

I love the modern carbon and fiberglass stocks, fluted featherweight barrels, milled out receivers and bolts but lately a nice wooden, blued m70 in 270 seems pretty cool.

Also....as much as I want to drive over to outdoorsmans (and I'm going to) I'm sort of dreading it because I don't know if I'll be able to walk out of there empty handed.

They have all the high end hunting optics, Leica, zeiss, Swarovski, vortex, leupold....scopes, spotters, binos and their tripods and bi pods are world famous, walking into o that place with 2k in my pocket is probably a bad judgement call lol.

While I'm down here in Phoenix, I need to get a scope to put on that weatherby ultralight.

Trying to decide if I should just get something really awesome like a nightforce or something, it's already a pretty ridiculous gun as it is, may as well use it for an over the top "build".

What distance are you thinking you'll use it?

What magnification are you thinking?

Ive got 2 stocks for a pre-64 M70.

One is a 1946 stock that came with the gun when bought it, the othet is a custom. Both are teardrop tang style.

Original must be at my brother's shop. Give me a shout if youre interested, ill make u a great deal. Like not much over you paying shipping.

Both are contoured for a heavy barrel.

And the gun was originally a 270 when i got it.

Post pics of the custom one monday.

This is the custom one. It weighs about 7lbs. Probably not the best for your application, plus the barrel channel is really big. The whole rifle in this stocked came it at 17lbs. The factory target stock is lighter, but still hogged out for a bull barrel, and its a bit flimsy. The action from that stock is #65979 somewhere round 1947 when it was made. It's 30'06 now in a different Old time target stock. Its like a Carlos Hathcock rifle with a better scope on it.

Wow a 17lb rifle that's just nuts haha!!!

Yeah, after skimming your criteria for a sheep gun realized what I got doesn't nearly fit the bill.

This is it now, only 13lbs.

Found that period model Highpower stock on ebay and swapped it. The angle of that heavy ass custom stock caused the rifle to recoil up from a prone position. It was a motherfucker trying to shoot a good score at 1000 yards with it.

The ebay stock tracks straight back. Its far superior and was only a 10th the cost.

pre-64s do have a nice distinctive feel to the actions. Metallurgy is different too, can't say it its better or worse but its less pingy, more dense feeling, greater deadening affect. Find the right estate sale I bet you can still get one reasonable.

I had a friend who had an old school surplus usmc m70 with one of those old school style scopes they used back then, he could shoot itnrewlly well out to ~ 700m

Man I had one of those too. I had got my copy of Marine Sniper Autographed by Carlos himself.

I was set to go and be Carlos Hamhock on some coyotes. but then I sold the Scope and when I got this gun years later those original scopes were too damned high. That was the good ol days.

Now I'm old ugly and stupid and don't care one way or the other no more. Rather be riding motorcycles.

We drove to cabelas today in Phoenix (it was like a fucking hour away). That place has an impressive collection of animals there, some absolutely awesome bighorns, elk, pronghorns. But they also had an awesome polar bear, musk ox and a nice moose. Pretty cool, I checked out all those probably more than the actual stuff for sale.

Their "gun library" also had some awesome stuff in it. I had fun pulling the muzzle loaders down and aiming at the animals across the store.

Only downside was it was far as fuck away and like 18 people (no joke) tried to get me to sign up for a cabelas card.

Yeah cabelas and bass pro have some cool stuff.

Dammit it's fucking hot.

@bushman505

You check out scopes?

Yeah I handled some night force stuff. Pretty badass scopes. I'm going to go to outdoorsmans in a day or so and pick their brains a bit as well.

Also: Kuiu (a hunting clothing company that's big in the ultralight, sheep, back country scene) just released their version of the "ultimate sheep rifle"....what a joke. It's made by Remington, has a proof research barrel, comes in 6.5cm aaaaaaaaand all for the low price of 6000 dollars.....they must be kidding.

It looks cool but for 1/2 the price you could be rocking a kimber mountain ascent with a matching zeiss hd5 and still have $$$ left over for ammo, sling etc. hell, you could get a kimber montana and throw a Swarovski z5 on it and be well under 3k.

Also....6.5cm for a sheep gun, I don't know about that, not knocking the 6.5cm but is that really that great of a hunting round (excuse my ignorance of the 6.5) but you need to anchor the sheep instantly, if it sprints or stumbles, it's going off a cliff and you're never going to see it again. Furthermore, most sheep/goat hunting happens in bear country, id hate to have to deal with an interested/hungry grizzly with a 6.5.....maybe it's just me and maybe I'm totally off base but when thinking of the "ultimate sheep rifle", a Remington in 6.5 dosent really even register.

Yeah man, that animal display at cabelas was really good, lots of once in a lifetime animals there. Bison, musk ox.....polar bear ?!?!?! I wonder how long ago that thing was shot, I don't think they have been hunted other than by natives for a looooong time. On that note the Alaska department of fish and game has started talking about opening them back up to hunting...that would be incredible.

And yet AlGore would have you believe they're dying in record numbers on ice out in the Pacific because the ice caps disappeared 3 years ago...

Oh... wait a second

Yeah not a good buy imo.

6.5 is surprisingly nasty with the right ammo.

Dropping Elk at 600

What magnification range were you looking at for that rifle?

I somewhat recently looked at a VX6 3-18 tmoa, 19oz. It's really nice.

That's a good question, in the past, I've never bothered with anything over 8 or 10x because I don't really hunt much past 400 or occasionally 500 this new rifle is really more of a long range hunting rifle compared to my others so a 3-18 would be awesome.

Right now I have a 308 with a 3-9 and a 30-06 with a 1.5-5 but this 300wby is sort of another thing entirely so I may as well get it set up to shoot long, I think it would be an awesome setup strictly for moose or elk hunting.

The VX6HD in 2-12 or 3-18 would be badass on a rifle like that. The 2-12 is 16.8oz 12.5" and the 3-18 is 20.4oz 13.5". Price difference is $200. I personally like the tmoa but they have a few different reticles.
