Seems like it would get in the way while bow hunting. Maybe not. It's a cool idea, especially for when it's really hot out (may help me your back dryer).

What that pack??? I could see it getting snagged up. I guess my opinion with packs is that there's basically one style that has stood the test of time for thousands of years....the basic backpack. I've seen several companies pop up and disappear over the years with some "new" "innovative" design that claims to be better than a backpack. I think there are times when they can be better. I've seen my dad use similar packs to that but he had them because he was in the military and aome of the stuff he did had him in planes and helicopters so packs like that would let you sit while still having your survival gear on you. Packs like that are also ok for fishing/fly fishing where you are standing in water so it's nice to just reach down for whatever you need.

For now hunting, each to their own but I don't think it would work for me. For a normal day of bow hunting, nist a normal 30-40l pack ilcinched down is good for me.
 
It's had pretty decent reviews on some of the other archery forums I lurk. The pack is supposed to sit closer to the belt line, shouldn't interfere with the draw. I just wish I was able to handle one before deciding, so I could see, in person, just how noisy it might be.

Speaking of bow hunting. I'm thinking of going full trad for bow hunting when I return. I'd love to take moose and elk with a recurve.
 
It may be a tad ambitious for someone of my skill level, or lack thereof, but I put in for Pronghorn this year. Don't plan on trying to take one with a bow, though. Those fuckers are fast.

Yeah and their eyes are basically the same as your rifle scope....they aren't that hard to kill but get really comfortable with shooting prone out to 300yds.

I shoot them with a 257 weatherby or a 270.

I guess my 2 real pieces of advice for shooting speed goats it firstly, never ever under any circumstance try to shoot them when they are running, they are too fast and you'll just hit a different one than you are aiming for and injure another one.

Secondly, don't get discouraged if you get skunked, it can take work to get a shot lined up and they spook easily, don't take shots out of desperation, wait for the perfect shot.

The second one sounds obvious but I think it's even more important with antelope because I've seen people get so eager to get a shot that they take a bad shot and injure the animal.

I read once that more antelope have been injured and gotten away to suffer while they die than any other animal simply because it's so much more difficult to get close to them.

Just shoot something that shoots super flat and be very very patient. I love hunting antelope, I've gotten a dozen or so over the years.

I don't think it's overly ambitious, you have to learn somehow. Perhaps wh n immbackmin the states we could go hunt something together. Any caribou or moose up your way??? Awesome elk, antelope and sheep down my way but sheep are expensive as fuck to hunt.
 
Choosing scope ring heights. If I have a 50mm objective do I need the high rings from Vortex that top out at 31mm from base to center?

There are elk and moose (not many this far south, though). That said, only white tail are open to non-residents and that season is usually very short.

Just talked to my dad and he wants me to do a bunch of duck hunting with him next year. Apparently he has unrestricted access to his friends land which is supposedly duck hunting heaven.

All my shotguns are shorter home defense type pump guns. I'm thinking of getting a nice semi auto 12g with a longer barrel and maybe completely camo covered. Maybe a browning or a beretta.

Anybody have experience with this type of hunting/shotgun? I've never done much bird hunting.

The Weatherby. Two stores in my place quoted me around $600 for a naked Vanguard so I think I will go that route. It'll keep it under $1000 and with the Leupold package it's around $1100 MSRP on the Weatherby site so I am coming out ahead with a bigger magnification and easier to use zero reset style turret too.

The HST ones are nice but the Crossfire ones are an amazing bang for the buck.

I need a Spotting Scope and I'd like to grab a bipod for bench shooting. The range I hit has little prop things with sandbags but they just feel too high for me.

Yeah I want a decent spotting scope that I can take hunting, I have several pairs of binoculars but I've actually never owned a "nice" spotting scope, a few so-so bushnells but never anything really nice. Im not planning on spending zeiss/Leica/Swarovski type $$$ but something in the 400-600 dollar range would be cool.

It would be awesome for antelope and sheep although I'm not sure when I'll go after sheep again.

Vortex has their Viper spotting scopes.

Yeah, I've decided on the Weatherby and the one store I like to go to for my AR stuff is willing to waive the transfer fee if I buy it through them and they can glass bed it/cerakote it and are willing to mount and sight in the scope too for me.

The benefits of visiting the local shop even when you can't purchase anything.

Yeah that's probably what I would go with, a vortex spotting scope. I'm excited to get back next year and hunt like a madman. It would be great to get a few antelope and an elk down south with my dad then moose and caribou up north.

Jlagman talking about antelope got me all fired up. I've never been a trophy hunter, always just for meat (with exception to a few elk I've shot....but also ate). I'm thinking its time to get serious about a really nice fat antelope. Like really picking one out rather than taking the first clear shot.

I have a vanguard in 257 weatherby that has a vortex pst on it. I want to work up some awesome loads for it and use that. I've used it in the past but only with factory ammo, that's what I'd put the Harris bipod on.
