What's Your Next Purchase? V5

Ugh, I've misplaced an AR buffer in my room someplace... probably never to be seen again until I move out

Mine was similar. Would only function with the recomended ammo: cci mini mags. Had to run it really wet too, very light oil, like tri-flo.

After that it worked ok, but felt like it had an almost negative recoil, as slide closing on next round felt more than round blowing the slide back.

The 22s weren't as accurate as id hoped either.

A buddy of mine had another brand conversion, and said these seemed better than his. Cant remember his brand, but if these are better, the bar could be low?

Looks like one of the previous owners dry fired the shit out of this thing.

:(

Fuck!

This is a used one?

Maybe the issue is the mass of the slide?

Maybe a polymer slide with steel inserts at contact points?

22s don't seem to have enough ass to kick back these slides, properly?

Mine is sitting in its box. Been there for 4 years now.

Opinions on side charging uppers?

Good? Bad? Not worth the extra "flair"?

I've handled a Gibbz nonreciprocating side charging upper very recently. Very cool design. I believe @Cubo de Sangre has one.

Correct. The Gibbz is extremely well-built. The plan was to use it with the Jack lower but a number of factors changed things. Now I'm looking at using it with a "Mean Metal Guns"-branded Seekins lower.

As for it being worth it, that depends on how adventurous you are. There's nothing wrong with how the AR charges so for me this was more of an aesthetic choice than a practical or functional one. It just seemed like fun. It adds a little extra width, if that's a concern. It might make sense with something suppressed because in place of the rear charging handle a little flap was added that tucks in when you mate the upper to the lower. Easy to forget, by the way. I'd expect it to do a better job with gas in the face because there's no gaps that the normal CH would produce.

To me non-reciprocating was important and I wanted LH ejection. Gibbz also offers RH ejection.

Finally got around to ordering a weatherby vanguard back country. I actually ordered 2 of them, one in 30-06 and one in 300wm.

Plan is to try them both and see how unlike that set up and weather I think it's a good all around hunting rifle (30-06) or see if it would make a pretty sweet bigger/farther game rifle (300wm). I have a buddy who agreed to buy whichever one I don't want so it's all good. I'll use a leupold vx2 ultralight to try them out and I already had a timney trigger for a vanguard so I'll put that in whichever one i keep.

I really didn't need another rifle but I've wanted one of these for like 2+ years and I've had such good experience with vanguards I figured fuck it.

Oh,

I also already had a detachable magazine kit from weatherby and a few mags for it. It won't work on the 300wm but if I keep the 06, I'll probably throw that on there for shits and giggles to see how I like it.

Would be nice whennim hunting from the truck and driving from spot to spot because the rangers and wardens are usually suuuuuuper struck about driving with loaded rifles, with the magazine you can just pop it out and throw it into the cup holder of the truck or your pocket and not have to deal with loading/reloading etc.

Just saw that ruger is releasing a gp100 in 44 special next week.

Sort of a strange concept, not sure why they are making it in 44special seems like a pretty antiquated cartridge, not particularly good for woods and not as good as a 357 mag for self defense. I always thought the 44spcl was for cowboy action shooters in their single actions. Strange.

I'm looking at this one as a possibility . . .

Saw this and thought you may be interested.

My buddy has a browning that he really loves, I've never had much of a chance to use one. They have some sort of a strange magazine that stays attached to the floorplate.

It would also be cool to check out an interesting cartridge at some point, 26/30 nosler, 6.5-300 wby etc.

I was reading a comparison of the nosler and weatherby rounds and read the 6.5-300 doesn't fit in a standard long action. That seemed to be a negative for quite a few people considering the two. Basically concerned of it having less support for the cartridge in the future.

So, upon inspecting some fired brass, the peening on the chamber from the firing pin is definitely rubbing on the outer case walls. My clean and oil certainly helped, but I need to get one of those 22 chamber ironing tools.

That's what has been keeping me away from stuff like that. In weatherbys defense though, they've done a good job of keeping calibers going through the years, I think the 257wby has been around 50+ years.

The biggest thing for me is ammo availability because I often hunt innsome pretty off the grid places and in the bouroughs in Alaska you can usually get some 308 or 3006, 300wm and even sometimes 375hh and 44mag but I've never seen much else, I'm sort of old fashioned and I always think about those situations then i also figure that these standard cartridges have been used for so long, are the new crop of super fast 6mms and short magnums really any better?

Do you guys think I am a bit, well, insane for trying to go down the rabbit hole of making my AR-10 like an MK12?

It's insane if you want it but don't try.
Like, I have a Geissele trigger for it and a Rainier Arms ultramatch barrel so... Meh, fuck it, not going to do it.

Think I'll do something similar to what I did for my current AR build, super long handguard (intend for the AR-10 to be a mix bench/gravel pit fun gun and hunting rifle if I want to), get a nice Larue QD mount for my 6-24 Viper scope, and just put a fixed stock on the badboy and have a muzzle break like one of the BCM comps.

American rifleman had an article about the new gp100 5 shot 44spcl.

It looks badass actually, 3" barrel, un-fluted cylinder, hogue tamer grip with no finger grooves.

Shit I don't know what I'd do with a 44spcl but I bet with some of buffalo bores hard casts or something from double tap it would make a pretty sweet woods gun.

Major downside though, no cheap plinking ammo. Even 44mag has some stuff you can get for 20 dollars a box, I suppose there isn't anybreally good options for my 454 either.
