What's Your Next Purchase? V5

@Cubo de Sangre

How was the vacation

I'm flattered you asked.

Great times were had. First order of business was seeing Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at the Greek Theater. Outstanding performance and our seats were like 25 feet from the stage. He's probably most recognized for this track that was used in Scream.

He's got a lot of weepy ballads too. This song had me crying like a baby most of the way through.

Here's a clip from the show I was at. This ditty is about a dude being executed via electrocution. Builds to a nice crescendo.

The Man In Black does a great cover of it on his AMAZING five disc box set.

If you like songs about murder and rape then this one is for you.

That was just the first night. Then I ate as much good Mexican food as possible. Had some killer BBQ (smoked beef ribs and pork). Installed my buddy's BFS III for him. Took a trip with it to the national park (Los Padres?) and brought the following.

  • Sig P226 Tacops 9mm
  • Sig P938 9mm
  • HK 45
  • LMT lower with what I believe was an LMT piston upper
  • Noveske Infidel copy build (my friend's first AR build)
  • Another upper and can't recall what it was
  • Various targets (paper, metal, glass)
  • Some tannerite
  • Beer :eek::D
We shot up a buncha shit and did a number of mag dumps. Couldn't hit jack with the P938 but it was hard to miss with the P226. I need one of those for sure now. At the end of the day someone got the bright idea to toss a (whiskey) bottle in the air with four rounds in the P226. Wasn't me, but could have been my friend or one of the two (really cool dudes we met) who arrived at the end of the day with a Russian Makarov in 9xwhatever that thing shoots. Took me all four rounds to hit the Maker's Mark bottle (which the other dudes showed up with that we had all polished off). Was proud to be the only one lucky enough to hit one of the bottles. Not sure if the fourth guy tried, but three of us did. And all this is exactly why we went to the wilderness instead of the formal range. So much fun!!!

Also met up with some other friends in the area yesterday who I hadn't seen in about a year. This of course revolved around more eating and drinking. Now I'm tired as fuck and trying to re-hydrate from it all. But home safe and sound with my wife and wonderful babies. By "babies" I mean these beasts.

Sounds like a good time there.

Not really my type of music but that ship song is good.

Is stagger lee where you got your user name from?

Oh and lmao "If you like songs about murder and rape then this one is for you." Can't say I've ever heard that before.

Yeah I rarely go to actual ranges. Desert/wilderness all the way. Tannerite, propane tanks, random other shit. Good times.

Yeah if you can swing it I'd try to find a SAO Legion 226, it's ridiculously awesome imo. Probably the smoothest non 1911 pistol I've shot.

Good looking pups.

Thanks for giving it a listen. Here's where I got my (business) screen name from.

Thanks for the tip on the Legion. I'll keep an eye out.

The pups say thanks and they hope you had a Helluva 4th!

Not sure if a place over there would have one to handle. The DA/SA are nice but that sao with the flat trigger and 3.5# break are just so nice.

Yeah just did some chilling, grilling and swimming. It's pretty hot out and I couldn't stay out too late as I had to wake up at 430.

Tempting for the price.

Was planning on getting a grey ghost gear minimalist carrier at some point.
If you could get that neck thing and the arm plates off I think it'd be worth it.

Other than Nighthawk.. do any other companies accept you sending in your 1911 for them to do custom work on?

Like I know Les Baer, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, and Wilson are the 4 top tier companies to go to for high end 1911s but I wasn't sure if the three that aren't Nighthawk you could have them perform some work on a pre-existing 1911.

Saw some used M&P40's at Gander Mountain during their going out of business sales for about $260. Thought about picking one up.

You could try Chambers Custom.

I'm thinking about sending the Springfield I got as a birthday gift when I was 21 off to someone to get some slide to frame fit tightened, getting a nice standard guide rod system and shit put in and have night sights put in because all I have is the standard WWII/WWI style sights on the damn thing...

But part of me also wants to keep this as is for sentimental reasons.

I feel you. Got a Springfield 1911 as inheritance from my dad and have no use for the stock pistol but it feels weird to make a bunch of changes to it.

Exactly. It's like when I get my dad's guns his optics are pretty bare bones just a cross hair and are super old school Bushnells... I still don't think I would change them out/modernize them unless the damn things were destroyed or banged up to the point they were unusable.

Coincidentally I also received an old fixed power Zeiss scope that I both don't want and don't want to part with. For the right deal though I'd make a sale or trade.

Yeah you can, it's all modular and has other pieces available.

Not that I know own of.

So I was talking to a guy at a gun shop(Scottsdale gun club) here about upgrading cheaper 1911's. He didn't recommend it. He said upgrading a nice Colt (combat unit rail gun), Springfield TRP and a like is worth it. For around $1800-2200 you get a badass 1911 with a feel that is negligible different to the 3k+ Wilson's, Nighthawk, etc. He personally was carrying a colt rail gun that had all the hand fitting, action, trigger job. He unloaded it and let me manipulate it. Felt buttery smooth and noticeably better than the stock model.

So he was saying upgrading a trigger, springs, getting the entire gun polished(action/trigger/whatever job) etc is good. He personally didn't recommend gutting a cheap 1911, using different barrels, etc especially with a cheaper model. Every upgrade needs to be hand fitted to everything else(cheap or high end 1911). You can't add metal to a cheap gun and if it's already loose after they polish and deburr everything it will be even looser. Also most people won't notice a significant difference between a good factory and match barrel. Buying a bunch of different match ammo and finding what your gun prefers is the biggest improvement.

Now that's just what this guy was saying, I'm not an expert on anything like that, just repeating.

Not sure I see the problem with a barrel upgrade. It gets fitted in there tightly and produces a more consistent lockup. Don't see how that would have anything to do with any other modification.

If the 1911 was made to a different spec or sloppily they may not be able to fit it in there tightly as needed is what he made it sound like. Can't add metal to the slide is what he said a couple times.

High-end barrels are over-sized and need fitted by taking metal off of them. Or so I thought.
