What's Your Next Purchase? V5

ARGH! Wish I could but I don't have the cash right this second unfortunately.

That's my problem with "project guns too"....I'm like: yeah I'll just do it slowly piece by piece over the course of a few months...

Next thing I know I'm breaking the bank by doing it all within the space of a week.

I want a mccmilan stock with that old school "forest camo" pattern on it for the BDL that got thrashed.

Saw a kimber Montana in 223 for a great price in a local shop. I would have gotten it but my wife was with me....lol.

I'm thinking of trying to head back in a day or 2 to grab it.

I was actually thinking of just playing with it a. It then surprising my friend who lives up north as he hunts with a 223 but just has an old shitty one because he uses any money he makes to do stuff for the village he's in.

This guy is a legit subsistance hunter, he kills bears and moose, caribou too with a 223.

That would be a pretty awesome gift to get.

Honestly it doesn't surprise me. If you can get a sub 200 yards shot on something you will get about a .40-.50 cal hole(excluding hydro shock) with pretty good penetration. 70-75gr with a longer barrel should do even better.

I've seen shows with Alaskans hunting with 223 on almost everything. Read that mini 14's and AR's are very popular up there and used on damn near everything.

Hell some dude blasted a polar bear with an AR15, 7 shots as fast as he could, dropped it quick. It went way in land and charged the guy from about 10 yards away after jumping out of some brush.

Mini 14s and ARs are easily some of the most popular guns with subsistance hunters, it's sort of funny they say "the closer to anchorage you get, the bigger the calibers get" and that's true in my experience.

My friend is on track to becoming an elder I. The village which is pretty cool, he's my age but rather than leaving to earn money he stayed to help clean up the village and help get the tennis on a better path. His income is basically the state income so probably like 8-10k a year. Nicest dude you'd ever meet though and probably the best hunter I've ever met.

I've been wanting to get him a new rifle for awhile just haven't seen one worth doing. I figure I could grab that kimber (700 bucks) and spend a few hours doing some of the fixes that old kimbers need (some of them anyways) and send it up there, it would be a big upgrade for him.

I suppose a mini 14 would be equally as appreciated, I just wish the mini took AR mags, that's a big reason lots of guys go with a basic AR over the mini.

I'd love to get a PO box up in a substance community those guys get to shoot like 10 caribou and 2 moose a year per family member, it's crazy lol.

Have you heard of the fightlight scr?

Kind a blend between a mini and ar.

I've got a Strike Eagle I run, it is a great optic for the price. I hate that the factory that builds it is in China, but whatever.

Doesn't help that the barrel company I want to use their shop is only like an hour away.

Going to go coyote hunting when I am in Utah.

Alright, I get in the gun industry you kind of get what you pay for... but is anyone else annoyed that companies like US Optic, Nightforce, March Optics, and Schmidt & Bender don't have any more... reasonably priced options?

Ehh idk maybe. But it's kind of like asking Lambo, Ferrari, McLaren, etc to build a much cheaper car. I have a feeling even their cheap line would still carry the name tax and probably not be better(or not by much) as other options already in that range.

Nightforce does have stuff in the 1X00 range.

I'd maybe wait to see the line that replaces the mark 4 before buying anything. Finish the rifle, then get the glass.

That's my intent. I know the new Leupold V3i-LRP is awful enticing.

Exposed turrets, a zero stop, mil based reticles auto come with a mil based adjustment that is .1 Milrad and the FFP models are $1200 MSRP and I've seen them listed at $900 some places.

I grabbed that kimber montana in 223 today.

The guy at the shop kept going on and on about how if it dosent shoot he's not taking it back. I played dumb and got him down to 625 out the door, it has a vortex diamondback 3-9 on it.

We did the very basic montana tricks to it, put some longer action screws into it, ground down the legs of the magazine box and took it out, put 3 rounds into a 1" area several times between me and a buddy.

Seemed good so I packaged it up and packed in a bunch of freeze dried coffee and powdered creamer and had it sent up to my buddy.

Not the same scope, but I really like leupolds, awesome warranty and good quality.

I know it's not, kinda sucks the Mark 4 is on the way out but I love that Leupold has something that can compete with the Vortex Viper series. There's something about how the Viper you could end up with a MilRad reticle but MOA adjustments that annoys me. You'd think Vortex would be on top of something like that to prevent it.

Who knows, maybe by the time I get this 6.5 Creedmoor done my CC will be paid off and I could splurg on some Schmidt & Bender or March or US Optics scope.

I know the feeling. I want to upgrade my binoculars but damn nice ones are expensive. I saw some trijicons that I really love but they are like a thousand bucks, I was checking out maven optics and their customizations...but they aren't cheap.

Luckily I think I can spin it as a "work" thing with my wife because I do need binos for work.

I also considered smashing my old pair or "losing" them lol but that would be dumb. It's not so much of an issue of $$$ but for some reason after 3.5 years of marriage my wife finally started calling me out on my gear addiction.

I'm personally glad the mark 4 is being replaced. Terrible magnification range imo. Let's get the MK 4 quality and glass with a much better magnification range.

3.5-10
4.5-14
6.5-20
8.5-25

When you have competitors with
3-12
3-15
3.5-21
4-16
4-20
5-20
5-25
6-24
Etc

I like my Vortex Diamondback binos. I mean, they aren't top tier but they work for what I need them for.

True, I'm interested if Leupold and Vortex or that matter will start futzing with the 30 and above ranges at some point.

I know MOA is "the thing" for how to measure shots at range and make adjustments but there HAS to be a reason that the military uses MIL measurements and adjustments. It's a big reason my scope for my 6.5 will have both. I want to fiddle with it.

I know part of the reason for MOA is at 100 yards it's super simple to make adjustments. I ALSO know however with mil dots anything OVER 100 yards the adjustments are also very VERY simple... it's as simple as counting the fucking dots on the reticle.

I want to be able to consistently get 1"-2" groups from 300 yards (the longest range in my area). Long distance shooting has always fascinated me. I know my folks would not be a fan of me spending what could be the equivalent of a down payment on a brand new Super Duty for a rifle and scope BUT I bet my dad would be more down with it if I told him what my goal is as he'd get to participate in it.

OOOOOO, the Razor HD Gen II comes with MRAD adjustments and MRAD reticle.

My dad has a pair of those and they are solid. I've had vortex and leupold, but now that I'm actually living in Alaska, in like 9 months I'll have residency hunting rights so sheep and goat, over the counter licenses, no ma distort guides....I also found out that if I want I could get a position in the lake and peninsula bourough and they have subsistance rights so I could hunt year round.
