Has a great highlight reel of knockouts, has a fun personality, has a fun instagram and seems to understand the promotion game a bit better than Stipe.

To add to this he's way more active too which can help with popularity. He's had almost 3x as times as many fights as stipe over the last 5 years (14 fights vs only 5)

Followers on instagram does not equal popular, although there is some correlation. It means popular amongst people who have an instagram account, which is a fairly specific demographic of people. Eg none of me or my friends use instagram, doesn't mean we are not fans of certain athletes.

Derrick Lewis's IG numbers aren't even about him.

For years, he would post wild videos he came across online. Car crashes, industrial accidents, arrests, street fights, people beefing and freaking out.

It's all jokes to him. Derrick would post something terrible caught on a dashcam or surveillance cam that had to result in injury or death, and he would caption it something like "He all right, don't worry"

Derrick has received complaints from IG about it, he just laughs it off. Joe Rogan has gleefully said "Derrick Lewis's instagram page is the best. If there's anything crazy going on in the world, it's on his page."

Honestly, it's gross to me. I hate how social media has killed empathy and turned human misery into entertainment.

The same people liking your post will still go straight to social media and praise Derek Lewis.
