I'm not hating on the guy, he's obviously a phenomenal champion but when I watch him I don't see anything special.

Like if I look at the last three hw champs.

With Cain, you knew he had that relentless pace that would break fighters, world class wrestling and good striking.

Prime JDS had very fast hands, granite chin, great wrestling defense and a warrior heart.

Werdum had the most dangerous ground game in the hw division, good Muay Thai and was very tricky.

I just don't see what makes Stipe so dominant.

Probably the most well rounded guy at Heavyweight right now. Not great at one thing. Good at them all. But Ngannou is a tough test. Better have a good gameplan or take a pillow. #LET THEM BANG!!!

I have to agree with this but also add he gives me the prime JDS aura in terms of KO power. He knocked Werdum out cold while back peddling.

He SEEMS un-special on the surface.

Doesn't really do anything overly dramatic in the cage, doesn't utilize much flashy technique.

But he is a dude with a very a very precise skill-set (Golden Gloves Boxing Champ, D1 wrestler) and is a tough mo-fo to boot

Good cardio, and good heart.

I can understand why a lot of folks don't think he is the greatest ever, but the above qualities, at heavyweight nonetheless, can't be entirely overlooked.

He beats Ngannou, and he becomes the ONLY heavyweight in UFC history to defend the title 3 consecutive times.

That has to count for something.

His knack for finding the hole in your game and the opening for his fist. Plus which, an extraordinarily calm and stubborn will.

And though he might not be the top student of any one aspect, his grade point average is higher than the rest of the pack.

Fire fighter/mma heavy weight champ

His last four wins are first round KOs over Arlovski, Werdum, Overeem and JDS. His other win was a five round smashing of Mark Hunt with multiple 10-7 rounds.

I think that speaks for itself. But I'm still picking Ngannou by KO.

Have to disagree, he has not shown that he is good at submissions.

great wrestler, brutal ground and pound(Overeem fight), amazing short range ko power, one of the best boxer in ufc today

well his hands arent special.

when u put people to sleep it takes away what there are good at no matter what. I will think the stipe beat jds the first time.

stipe didn't need to be a great bjj and wreslters when he such a good boxer.

Ko'd werdum on his back foot and knocked overeem out cold in full guard.....no one does that

to quote a salty JDS fan
"I give up on how to solve stipe's platinum level boxing....fuck my life"

I really like stipe so I hope he wins and goes on to have the longest defence strip in ufc history and retire a champ

one of those guys who fill a void during a weak period for the division.Francis will change that

I agree with everything you said but just want to point out that HW golden gloves isn't what it was when you had Ray Mercer vs. Tommy Morrison or Riddick Bowe vs. Michael Moorer in the mid 80s

Well he's KO'd 2 of the guys you've mentioned. So that's pretty special.

Boy I love Cain ,
but he sure has everybody viewing his legacy through rose tinted glasses....everyones acting like he was an unbeatable monster when he is still the guy that got cleanly ko'd, subbed and dropped 50 times by Kongos jab

He has good footwork & moves very well for a heavyweight. He doesn't really do anything flashy but has very strong fundamentals.

Golden gloves as a whole isn't what it used to be...but actually alot of top pros still go through it...that's where stipe fought former world heavyweight number 1 contender Bryant jennings
