Looked on the stickies and couldn't find out what the term meant, thanks guys.

Not sure where the phrase comes from, but in my experience though playing sports...someone who is "sandbagging" is basically losing on purpose, knowing they can win.

It's a different definition for grappling.

Sandbagging refers to someone who enters a skill division much too low for them in order to ensure an easy victory.

It's really common in grappling competition. Ever wonder why the Beginner division is ALWAYS the biggest one?

That is not really an accurate description. In other sports like pool or golf, people will lose for a little while or understate their abilities so that they can later hustle someone for a lot of money.

Nobody loses intentionally in grappling torunaments. They just enter a lower division than they should so that they can win.

i think when you hear the term here, it is referencing "belt" styles, where you say you're a white belt, but you're really a blue, either from your own doing or you've been held back by your instuctor for some reason. i guess it pisses people off in competition b/c you're lying about your level just so that you may win easier. i think this is right. i'm new to the term myself.

Sandbagging is exactly what Balto said: a person entering a competitve event in a skill division below the one they should realistically be in, e.g. a purple belt level competitor entering the novice division.

A sandbagger can also be the guy in the club who has been rolling for years but never goes against guys his skill level or above, or avoids bigger partners, or even the guy who passes up promotions (IMO) to remain a white belt FOREVER.

Pretty much it means that if you're doing it intentionally you're a douche. Entering a tournament so that you can win it easily also makes you a coward.

I believe the expression 'sandbagging' literally means if you were in a foot race and you were carring sandbags...knowing you could drop them at anytime and be better than the competition.

hahaha awesome...never heard that before

in basketball, people often use it to describe the guy that doesn't run down the court to play defense. instead, he loafs it back to the defensive end but never really makes it hoping the other team will score quickly or miss and his team can chunk him the ball for an easy basket.

Yep sandbagging is misrepresenting your skill level to gain easy victories over less skilled opponents. Pool sharks are masters of this.

I remember when tenpin bolling i heard it a lot, coz at the start of the season you would bowl a couple of weeks and your average would be used to place you in divisions, so people would sandbag, so they got put in the "easy" division

Can I ask another sport therm usage?

What the heck does

It ain't over until the fat lady sings?

I guessed it had something to do with the national anthem being sung but that doesn't make sense because well isn't the anthem sung beofre the game starts?

I used to think sandbagging in grappling was someone who would stall and lay on top of someone like a sangbag. lol

It's playing as if your ranking is lower than it is, like a blue entering as a white or a plack as a purple etc. Common amoung go players and chess players also. Really it's an operational term for any hobby/sport with an established ranking system. As a go player, I only mind if it's a rated game or a tourney, as one unexpectadly gets to play someone stronger and it also makes the inevitable loss easier to bear, lol.

from wiki:

It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings is a common expression in the theatre of North American sports. Attributed to writer/broadcaster Dan Cook, his original line was "The opera ain't over until the fat lady sings."[1] This occurred in April 1978, when he coined the phrase after the first basketball game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Washington Bullets (WWizards) during the 1977-78 National Basketball Association playoffs, to illustrate that while the Spurs had won once, the series was not over yet. This refers to the impression that at the end of every opera an aria is sung by a woman dressed like a valkyrie.

As a possible alternate origin for the term, there exists an old saying in the Southern United States stating that "Church ain't over until the fat lady sings." This form of the line was apparently well known in the South for years, appearing in a booklet in 1976 entitled Southern Words and Sayings.[2]

I prefer the second origin theory as it seems older, and likely inspired Dan's remark. (substitute church for opera)
