In the meantime, Romero should fight Gastelum for the interim middleweight title.

agreed lol. he only loses to dc, maybe gus. gus is definitely only a maybe i reckon. He still has a shot. volkan is again a 50 50. Volkan has a poor gas tank as well. Romero might actually have better cardio at 205, so?
he loses to rumble though if ever comes back. So there are only 3 guys that can beat him and even still 1 of those guys would be evenly matched with him. I am not including Goaterer aka jones in this conversation though.

If Romero doesn't make weight for Gastelum and/or losses, move up to LHW and take a crack at it.

I don't want to hear the Rockhold fight was 'short notice' since he had nearly 6 weeks to prepare. It was officially announced to the press as a signed deal a full month in advance.

For the Whittaker rematch, he looked like death failing to make weight. There are simply no excuses, he had months to prepare and couldn't make the weight.

It makes zero sense to reward him with an interim title fight. He should be fighting and winning at least one fight, if not two, before being granted another middleweight title shot.

I actually like Dana's idea of sending him to LHW for a contender matchup. With Jones out and DC at heavyweight its VERY thin division and Romero matches up very well with everybody left.
