Which do you prefer, the X series or the classic series which includes the NES games but also 7, 8, and Rockman and Bass which were on 16 bit and 32 bit consoles?

I give the classics credit for starting the genre, but also X credit for bringing the franchise into a new era. After playing 1-7, then X and X2, my general impression was that the quality of the X games was on average better.

Since then I have played 8 and X3 and these two have shifted my view to the classics being better. 8 is basically the perfect megaman game while X3 seems to have brought nothing new to the table and not quite as good as X and X2.

The basic formula of the X games also makes then a bit less accessible imo due to the steep starting difficulty, while the classic games are easier to just jump into, assuming you haven't memorized where every secret is.

What do you guys think?

Hmmm, well the X series started to go off the rails sometime into its' PS era, I think in X6 and on were subpar. Meanwhile though the quality varied after IV, the mainline series entries were all solid (though I did not like the cinematic cutscenes in 8).

The OG NES games were a mixed bag, but none of them weren't challenging, and fun, and the best ones like 2 were all-timers. Also some of the best scores in all of gamedom

I only ever played Mega Man 2 and 3 on my NES growing up. I never had a SNES so I never got to play Mega Man X. I also at the time didn’t understand that it was sort of a spin off series so I assumed the X meant the Roman numeral for 10 and wondered how I had apparently missed they could have released 4-9 so fast.

Mega Man 1-3 hold a special place for me. Those were very difficult games too. Some obscene platforming elements.

Classic.

1-5 got played and beat on a regular basis growing up. It was my first series I felt compelled to get and beat when they were released. Or shortly after, when I could get copies to rent. Only gaming apparel I’ve ever owned too, as I have a cool 8-bit Mega man shirt.
Love X too, but that little OG will always have a place in my memory above X.

Megaman 1-3 has some legendary tunes. The first Megaman X game for the SNES perfected the gameplay with the upgrades for the suit and offering an awesome feeling of control while using the environments to your advantage.

I love both but the X series holds a special place for me. X1-4 were ALL good.
OG Megaman 2-4 were good for me and I think I'm one of the few that enjoyed 6 as well.

As a series, I think classic is better. However, if I could only pick 1 game of them all I would pick Mega Man X. That was a big part of my childhood.

X "feels" better, and the presentation is amazing...

That being said Mega Man 2 is incredible.

Also the old skool games are way harder.

X is a bit easy, which can dissapoint fans of the older games.

I remember that cyclops mini boss being a mind numbingly frustrating thing to beat.
