What's a good mile time for a 16 yr old? I'm currently 6'1 and 200 lbs and in pretty bad shape :icon_chee.

For your age, a 7 minute mile...

Since you mentioned that you were in bad shape, shoot for a 10 minute mile as your first goal, then take 30 seconds off of that time per week with diet and regular running and jogging.

Everyone is different when it comes to running the mile. You could have shorter legs, longer legs, you might pace yourself, body weight, age, etc.

There is no set time, but the average time is probably 8-10 minutes. If you make it in any less time; you are doing well. Competitive runners usually make it around four minutes. Professional boxers are expected to run it in six minutes. The world record for the fastest mile is 1:30.

People are built with speed (fast twitch muscles) some people built with endurance (slow twitch) but thinking that decent high school milers run sub 5min, more sprint related runners would do good sub 6/ 530 so I would say somewhere in the 6/7 min range would be good for someone.

^^Isn't the record 3:43?

You're right. I got the wrong source.

The fastest mile ever run was 3:43.13 by Hicham El Guerrouj. He also holds a World Record with
1,500 metres (3:26.00), and 2,000 metres (4:44.79).

His nickname is "King Of The Mile".

when you are talking about professional boxers you mean 6 minute average over a period over miles or just a 6 minute mile?

I ran a 6 pretty easy back in the hs days (3 years ago) and can still prollly run a 7 with an extra 40lbs

Anyone over 200 lbs. running a sub 6 minute mile is doing something impressive imo.

I'm not sure how to view the comment on professional boxers being expected to run a 6 minute mile. What weight class are we talking about here.....ww, mw, smw, cruiser, hw? I could be mistaken, but I don't see Klitschko, Chagaev, Byrd, Chambers, Povetkin, etc. running at 6 or below.

6 minute mile is fantastic. I'd say the average person should be at least around 8 to be in decent shape.

I'm about 85kg and ran a 1.5 miler over varying terrain in 8 min 49 about a month ago.
Thats about 5 min 55 a mile

Edit- funnily enough though I wanted a better time and spent 3 weeks canning myself and doing interval work. Next time I was tested it was 9 min 42.

Fuck knows what happened there

Army requires a 1.5 mile in 10:30 for 16-18 year olds applying for West Point. Thats a 7 minute mile sustained pace.

I ran my mile in 6:50, and I don't consider myself a phenom of conditioning...

The way to know what a good mile time for you is go out and run a mile right now, see where your at, and train. If it's for a team ie track, or cross country, train with them, but if you want to get it down personally, try reading a few running books, like How To Train, by Hal Hagdon. Then it is a matter of diet and staying focused.

I test my mile on a grass running track, and so far the best time has been 6:20s. Weight is 95kg at 30 years of age. I'm aiming to get it down below 6 minutes, but that could take a while.

I've found the best thing for decreasing my mile time was doing a range of running intervals. My main ones were 1min active/1min rest x 10 reps and 3mins active/1min rest x 6. The latter really emulates the speed needed for a good mile.

You need to at least be 8 min. miles you are still very young , just shave of that baby fat. Right now you will probably be 10 min. miles.

I topped out at 5;18, I'm hoping to get back there this summer.

I've never tried to run just a single mile, the run I do regularly at the moment is 3.6 miles with hills and traffic lights unfortunately cos I'm in a city during term time and my best time was 24:30 so thats about 6:50 a mile, I'd like to think that for just a straight mile I could do it in under 6 minutes, I'll try and give it a go this week sometime.

here are some times i've achieved. been a couple of weeks since ive doneything at all, however. as you can see, the longer the distance the more my time increased. my endurance isn't the best in long distances.

500m swim: 9 minutes 33 seconds
1000m swim: 20 minutes 03 seconds
1.5 mile run: 9 minutes 18 seconds
3.0 mile run: 22 minutes 54 seconds
5.0 mile run: 42 minutes 05 seconds
