What would have happen to the UFC if Overeem had died in the cage to Francis?

Jon Jones would never have went up to HW ><

I think its very good no one has died like in boxing, that's all I really have to say about this question. lol.

MMA fighters have died, but they were on low level cards not in the UFC or major promotions

It's hard to say, I didn't know who the current John McCain is. Who is mma's enemy? BJ Penn is looking pretty bad as a prominent figure right now, but it's only gaining traction here and in MMA media. War machine, Baroni, MacGregor, haven't tarnished it's reputation enough to make an impact

the man has been ko'd like a gazzillion times before nganou ko'd past prime overeem

people will mourn but life goes on

Actually, boxing is way, way more dangerous than MMA.
I'm sure you know that, but gloves are there to protect hands and reduce cuts and blood that would cause to stop the fight because of impaired vision.

Because of potential duration, pace and the punching only nature of the sport, boxers absorb lots and lots and lots more strikes to the head. Punches coming from other boxers that hit with more power and accuracy.

And then it comes the most dangerous bit: the countdown, when a boxer programmed to pretend he's able to keep fighting for the ref stands up and just keeps getting punished.

In MMA, if you're out just for a moment, it's over.

Some people have died after boxing matches. It's horrible. But boxing keeps going.

Yeah but the argument would be should punches on the ground like that be allowed?

"Yes boxing is ok but this punching on the ground...that's barbaric!"

I highly doubt, besides some rare psycho, that any fighter actually hammer fists a KO'ed opponent on purpose. It's just a hardwired move plus the adrenaline rush.
I'm confident Francis regrets, and a lot, this unnecessary punch and the Stipe one.

That said: a negligent push vs an airborne opponent or a trip in NBA causing an ugly fall, even if not hurting him on purpose, means a suspension. Even if he doesn't actually get hurt, in fact.

MMA should act in the same way.

Oh I don't disagree that it was not on purpose to break the rules or get a free shot in, but even MMA fans get their panties in a twist over this, so of course outside voices will be even louder.

100% no question the repeated head trauma in boxing is more likely to lead to death, brain damage, long term mental health issues etc. It's not debatable.

Boxing is more dangerous for the brain. But MMA is dangerous to the whole body. It's amazing to see some of these guys able to have 20 yr MMA careers

Dana would have given a memorably emotional speech about the tragedy. Promptly signed Valentijn Overeem the next day and booked a match between him and Francis, to maximize the earning potential of the media outrage.
