What we now know about the Fox deal

the numbers dont lie. gsp and anderson are far bigger ppv stars than jones. weidman might step in and do well but both hendricks and lawler will fall way short of gsp ppv buys.

i just think its going to be tough to do better ppv numbers while losing the top two ppv draws. having 3 more events will obviously help totals but its an up hill battle imo

Don't forget Ronda Rousey. She will be a bigger draw than Jones and Wiedman.

Anyway the key is that more cards means more advertising and commercials which is more money so ppv doesn't matter as much.

I never know what is meant by " watered down". I'd rather watch 2 events that each had two fights I cared about than 1 event that had 4.

Most of the old stars are retiring, which is why they seem to lack "star power".

People seem to remember that there used to be like 6 UFC events in a year.., I bet there are still 6 events that are worth watching a year even to all these people saying they are " watered down"

2013

UFC 158 GSP vs Diaz 950,000
UFC 167 GSP vs Hendricks 630,000
UFC 168 Weidman vs Silva II 1,025,000

these were the biggest ppv in 2013 by a large margin. its no accident that its gsp and silva

UFC 148 Silva vs. Sonnen II 925,000
UFC 159 Jones vs Sonnen 530,000

the numbers dont lie. gsp and anderson are far bigger ppv stars than jones. weidman might step in and do well but both hendricks and lawler will fall way short of gsp ppv buys.

Having 3 events will more than make up for any possible loss. Again, GSP only fought once a year and now we will get around 3 WW title fights which would make up for the loss on its own. Remember, the UFC always had to stack GSPs card with up to 4 headline worthy fights because of how inevitably horrible his fight would be. Now they can spread those fights out and not lose as much money by having to stack the card. Weidman/Vitor will do huge numbers. The UFC will have there most profitable year ever in 2014. The UFCs most profitable years ever in order:

1. 2013
2. 2012
3. 2011
4. 2010
5. 2009

Do you see a pattern?

1. The UFC sold the most PPV's in the history of MMA in 2013 and they will sell more in 2014 due to having more cards.

2. There is a huge demographic that has been exposed to MMA due to the fox deal (most people don't ever watch Spike) and the way people view MMA has completely changed. People used to look down on you for liking cage fighting as though it was the same as pro wrestling. Now most people know the term MMA and recognize it as a real sport. Fox took the UFC mainstream.

Lots of posters want to pretend the UFC is somehow not doing well when they're doing better than ever by a huge margin.

According to the totals given on the following site that was hardly the case;

http://mmapayout.com/blue-book/pay-per-view/

I spent a few minutes calculating the yearly totals and 2013 ended up 5th out of the 8 years the site listed for PPV buys.

2006 - 5,270,000
2007 - 4,935,000
2008 - 6,325,000
2009 - 8,020,000
2010 - 8,980,000
2011 - 6,485,000
2012 - 5,835,000
2013 - 6,075,000

Some good points, but I wouldn't conclude that it hasn't brought in new viewers. The Fox shows are pulling 2-5 million viewers which is 5-10 times the viewership the same cards on PPV were likely to do.

I'm not saying either Fox or the UFC are happy with those numbers, or that they are "good". Just that it probably is bringing in new fight fans.

Common sense should tell you that one PPV buy does not equal only one set of eyeballs watching that PPV buy.

I believe it was the Sports Business Journal who came up with the estimates, but I think they said each buy is equal to about 5 viewers for an event on the the lower end of a PPV total and upwards of 9 viewers for those that do in the vicinity of a million buys.

both in red are false

also gsp fought twice in 2013 and did 1.6 million pay per view. theres not a snowballs chance in hell that hendricks or lawler do 1.6 million headlining in 2014 over 3 cards nevermind 2.

i also think rondas numbers will plateau or maybe even decline

i hope the ufc does great and all but losing anderson and gsp in the same year is going to hurt. it takes time to replace them with guys that can do similar numbers

Many of the bars I used to attend were so packed you had to get there pretty early to get a table or else have to stand all night. Now these same bars only get events when GSP or Anderson Silva was on it. It would still be pretty packed but not to the point where you couldn't move, and had to squeeze through people to get to the restrooms. I've seen a difference for sure. (I miss those old days)
