Just re-watched the main event of UFC 76 - Chuck Liddell vs Keith Jardine, all I can say is wow!
Scored it 29-28 Jardine, with him taking rounds 2 and 3 pretty clearly - he even dropped Chuck in the 2nd round.
There is a common joke in the MMA community about stolen chins and stolen souls, and in this case I really do think Rampage stole Liddell's chin. How does one of the greatest stand-up fighters ever, lose to Keith Jardine!
Respect to Keith, because he absolutely kicked Chuck's ass. Beat up his body very badly with kicks, and murdered his lead leg with awkward kicks. He repeatedly found the target with his straights and hooks also.
This was the start of the Chuck decline, he of course beat Wanderlei after this - but many thought he was shot by the time he entered the UFC roster also, and I agree with that. Chuck went on to get knocked dead 3 times in a row after this fight.
Many people said he didn't take Jardine seriously, or wasn't in great condition after the fall from grace. I can semi-understand that premise, as he looked gassed in the second round and didn't even have a home-run barrage at the end to try and steal the victory.
Pity that Keith at only aged 31 couldn't go onto better things after this. He has Chuck and Griffin on his record, not bad wins at all. His biggest win since was against Vera on another split decision. He went on to go 3-8-1 in his last 12 fights.
Finally, I must say it was actually a very good fight, would have loved to have seen 5 rounds!
What are your thoughts?
Why did Chuck lose? What was your reaction to the decision? Did you agree with the judges?
