What to do with a Raspberry Pi 4?

At $60 for the base model, $80 for the 8gb version, it's a hard sell for me. Raspberry Pi isn't the only SBC in the game anymore.

Personally, I would look towards something like hte ZimaBlade for at $64.
It's got a Celeron J3350 dual core processor, pcie 2.0x4 slot, replaceable ram, 32gb EMMc, dual 3.0 sata connectors, and includes a case.
You have to buy your own ram, but it's DDR3L. An 8gb stick on eBay is $10. Or you could harvest a stick from an old laptop.
There's also a J3455 quad core processor verson for $96.

Don't know much about the Rpi4 but i hacked my kids Arcade 1up with a Rpi3 and RetroPie with hundreds of arcade games. Might be out for Rpi4.

using rpi4 as pi-hole, nas at the moment(maybe jellyfin shortly). Kid has pi 400 for his computer. Thumbdrive to boot into retro-pie for retro gaming with some snes style controllers. Ordered an orange pi zero 3 to use as my htpc

pihole is so nice.
Can absolutely recommend installing pi-vpn (my preference is wireguard rather than openvpn) alongside it.
I have my phone connected home through wireguard at all times so I get the DNS cleaning from pihole on the go, makes the internet about 80% less annoying on mobile.
I also have a PoE hat on the pihole one so I can run it with just an ethernet cable from my poe switch.
Wireguard iphone app is so much lighter than openvpn is, I don't even notice it being on on the battery.
I also run an nginx reverse proxy to access my plex install etc on a pi, and I have one in of the nespi4 cases from retroflag connected to my tv at all times for my emulation station install.
New case is really clever with a 2.5" hdd or ssd in the little cartridge so it boots off usb instead of the sd card, runs a lot quicker.
I have a weather station planned for the zero 2 w as well, got everything ready except for the pi itself, been out of stock since it launched.

Pi 5 would be more appropriate for thread title.

I don't know much beyond Pi 3 like whether or not this is like VHS vs. Betamax where you hope stuff that supports Pi also supports various other boards if you choose a cheaper option.

All I know is I have a lust for CPU power and RAM and hoping the new Pi 5 can run normally what Pi 3 overclocked and extreme fiddling with settings could barely run enough to play in a handicapped way. The early quotes about Pi 5 being 2-3x more powerful than Pi 4 has me interested.

Make a home automation project or something, that stuff is usually fun, and then you end up with something maybe useful.

When he sees people playing Dreamcast, N64, PS2, he'll wish he got Pi 5. I'm glad I skipped Pi 4.

Sell it. I missed the initial Pi 5 presale. I'm hoping there will be a 16gb version.

Lots of people use a Pi, or other SIngle Board Computers, to run PiHole.

I had the raspberry pi 4 in my first arcade cabinet, still do, but I had to upgrade it ever so slightly.

For my newest arcade cabinet, I put in a 16 TB Hyperspin. I love it way more.
