If Holloway was having concussion issues, it would have been apparent weeks ago during the heavy sparring stages of his camp....stuff like that doesn't just pop up during fight week when you likely haven't sparred hard in weeks.

They should have pulled him before he had to go to the hospital on Monday, several people (even users on here) were saying he was off all week.

Not only are they jeopardizing his health (by far the most important part), but the UFC could have found a replacement fight if they would have pulled him earlier.

They also let him take the fight against Khabib on less than a week's notice when he was clearly way too heavy to take the fight....he damn near died trying to make weight for that shit.

Seems like a shitty way to handle any fighter, let alone a young champion like Holloway..

MMA coaching is mostly made up of bro scientists and failed competitors. You get the sense that some of them are living vicariously through fighters, while not protecting them.

Not saying this is the case here but in general, this sport attracts scumbags

Something must be wrong if he was talking like that. And can this be a cause from his last weight cut which was held within a day or two

It seems like there's a lot they're staying silent about

If they found out about it weeks ago and kept the UFC in the dark until last minute they should 100% get fined. Take a % out of Max's next fight purse, this is number one bullshit. Not only have you ruined the card you've also fucked the UFC's chances of finding a replacement.

Meh, Hendo did the same shit with a broken leg- he nursed it hoping it'd get better but it didn't so he drops out at the very last minute- and Jon Jones declined to fight Chael, whole card was dropped.
Max's situation here isn't as bad.. but still very concerning for his mental well being

He definitely didn't have enough time to recover from the Khabib weight cut either...

He got pulled from the fight because his health was in serious jeopardy from that cut...A guy who goes through that shouldn't even be fighting for at least 8-9 months, let alone 4 fucking months later.

He went though that cut and was literally in training camp the very next month wtf.

There's a reason why Khabib didn't fight for nearly 10 months after his botched weight cut at UFC 209. Holloway's camp is a bunch of fuckin morons...

I'm going to weigh in on this.

Something is fishy. Like Louis said, they would have know of any concussion related problems for weeks or at least a week. Either they don't give a shit about their fighter and were willing to let him fight severely concussed or this is related to the early weight cut.

Spar hard, die young and brain damaged.

Max needs to move to the mainland and get a real team. This has become nonsense.

We can only speculate at this point, I guess they wanted to avoid Max dropping out of another fight, and Max, being the crazy motherfucker that he is, played along the best that he could. Not saying it was a good plan, though.

These guys are paid by Max, he's the boss and i'm sure he was really keen to not drop out of his 3rd fight of the year, so it wouldn't surprise me if he convinced them to wait and see how he felt fight week, or it's possible the entire story in a cover for another weight cut fuck up.

Agreed. I seriously suspect it's a bad weight cut. Probably started to cut earlier this time after the whole Khabib debacle. If he missed weight again he should be stripped and forced to move up.

I’m on the side of the fence that, while it may be “concussion” issues, it’s absolutely in part due to the weightcut. I understand when his team say “he hasn’t even started his weightcut yet” that they are talking about the final stages of crazy saunas, binbag suits on the treadmill etc.

A week before the fight he should be, and likely is, well in to the weightcut. So it could be that he started his full cut way too late and so had to start the sauna bullshit way too early, he could also have been deep into the cut and got clocked while his body is/was too dehydrated. You’re certainly more susceptible to concussions from lighter blows when you’re dehydrated.

The question is: Did they intentionally sit on this knowledge in the hopes that he'd recover in time?

Or is it garden variety incompetence?

Either way, Max may need to change up his handlers

Lol, Steven Segal, anyone?
Yeah Hawaii, not enough critical mass for a legit MMA coaching staff. So what you get is amateurish compared to teams like Greg Jackson’s

That’s why most people woulda moved the the mainland . Same with BJ who wanted to retain his local heritage in his camp: no quality partners to spar with, amateurish coaching. I remember the cheerleading in between rounds when BJ was getting pummeled by GSP: you’re doing great champ... “To the death, GSP”

I think he should be stripped and forced to move up now. That's 2x in a row already, both last minute, and he looked like absolute shit 6 days before the fight. No more.

I agree TS. His team is responsible for this. When you have people on Sherdog who only see interviews of Max and people are picking up on something being wrong, what the hell kept his team from doing something?
These people spend all day with the guy, were well aware of his predicament, and just played it by ear until a few days before the fight.
Not Max's fault. He's young and just doing his job. His team are a bunch of morons, though.
