I was just talking about this with my old lady. For me, there is no question. I remember when I was about 15 or 16,my mother told me for my birthday she would buy me one book, and I was super interested in theoretical physics from documentaries I had seen on tv and such, so I knew that’s the subject I wanted it to be on.

I searched the internet for authors I knew like Einstein, Hawking, Michio Kaku, etc. but for some reason, I have no idea why, I decided on this book called The Elegant Universe by an author I had never heard of before named Brian Greene.

That decision really set me on the path to being who I am today at 31. From there I read everything on the subject I could find, which lead to reading on other subjects such as psychedelics, shamanism, ancient history, human biological origins, I could go on forever, but it really all stemmed from that one book. I probably would have got into all that shit anyway, but that book was the turning point for my young mind. It really made me think about reality in an entirely novel way.

So, what was yours?

RL Stine books, mainly the goosebumps series.

Raold Dahl books.

They really awakened by imagination, probably the only times where I could actually picture what was being described in my head.

Lead me to many other fun books in my younger days, too bad I dont read anymore. Im obviously more ignorant.

as bad as it sounds, because well, it was a "a million little pieces" you know, that book guy that got exposed as a lying jackass on oprah LOL. idk. i read it when i just turned 16 and just started to better my life and coming out of a bad place. it was the right book at the right time i guess. but throughout the book theres quotes from the tao. and i think that's what really got to me. i ended up getting a copy of that too and that was good for me to read. idk. it just brought me such peace. mhmm im a dumb lil hippy bitch nevermind me LOL but i still go back and read the tao sometimes. not james frey book tho i don't think i'd care for it now 10 years later. who knows.

Actually, this is mine. I used to read that shit early on, and use my thesaurus to get a larger vocabulary, as well.

My reading comprehension literally shit all over my peers until high school. Though, being raised in Arkansas, maybe that's not too difficult to achieve, but I was proud.

Goosebumps sparked the flame, Steven King fuelled the fire.

On writing has been the most helpful, the dark tower series the most profound. Still kills me to this day.

Everything I Ever Needed To Know, I learned in Kindergarten.

My father hit me in the face with it when I drove home drunk. I learned how to hide my drinking better.

The Bible for me. I found it to be a guide to lead a better life..

For me anyway.

This was probably meant to be satirical, but my grandfather was born in 1919 and had virtually no formal schooling and grew up on a tobacco farm in Kentucky, and he made point to learn a new word every day, and constantly did crossword puzzles. I remember sitting on his lap at 4:30am every morning as a toddler drinking coffee and eating toast and doing crosswords. That dude was a smart morherfucker RIP.

Man I probably read 50 books in the Goosebumps series when I was in middle and elementary school.

Also probably read at least 10+ Stephen King novels. The Stand is by faaaaar my favorite novel of all time. I make a point to read it once a year every year since 2014. Haven’t done it this year, I’m slacking.
