I'm not a gamer at all haven't been in a long time.i don't know crap about video games or gaming consoles.
Should I get a the new PlayStation 5 or the newer Xbox series x or whatever the hell other Xbox

Also what are the pros and cons of both?

Thanks

I have both. I would say either is fine. PlayStation gives you access to Sony’s exclusives, but going forward Xbox could potentially have a murderers row of its own amazing exclusives, but only time will tell.

Game Pass obviously gives tremendous value to the Xbox, but at the same time there’s always the outside chance you wouldn’t get much value out of it if you’re the type of person to only play a couple of games per year, but if you’re the type of person that would like to dabble in multiple games then it’s probably awesome (I say probably because I don’t have a subscription to it yet).

Performance wise they feel about equal.

Already two threads covering this topic:
  1. Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 - Which one will you buy?
  2. <<Console Wars>> PS5 vs. XSX: first comparisons of the two consoles are coming in...

As you can see from the top thread so far the PS5 has enjoyed the advantage of favor. I composed a contrarian post making the best case for the Xbox here:
Why should I buy an Xbox over a Playstation?

The heart and soul of the PS5's case is that Sony has just flat out been dominating the AAA sector in terms of the best exclusives. Conversely, the heart and soul of the Xbox's case is the Game Pass service which is equally dominant among game services. Game Pass Ultimate now packages all three gaming services detailed below.

Microsoft Game Pass
[XSX/XSS] [Xbox One] [PC] [Android] [iOS-- Spring 2021]
  • $10 ---- monthly, Game Pass PC ($9.99/mo)
  • $10 ---- monthly, Game Pass Xbox ($9.99/mo)
  • $15 ---- monthly, Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox & PC* ($14.99/mo)
*currently the Ultimate plan is available for a special $1/mo for the first month; even existing Xbox Live Gold members can still buy 3-months for $1
    • Has a companion app on mobile (iOS / Android)
    • The Ultimate tier of this service includes the Microsoft Xbox Live Gold service above, and its perks (i.e. online access, free Games with Gold giveaway games, etc)
    • Every Microsoft-published game is a Day 1 release on this service
    • 100% of titles on the service are downloadable; however, there is no streaming if you want to save storage
    • Xbox Cloud Game Saves means that if you sign into any Xbox console on your Xbox Account, you can pick up playing where you left off (Game Pass titles included)
    • 20% off Game Pass titles on Microsoft/Xbox stores if one wishes to buy them permanently (90+ days after release-- 10% off until then), and this includes the complete editions with all DLC even if that version of the game isn't the one appearing on the service; 10% off DLC, add-ons and related microtransaction content
    • Xbox Game Pass Quests is a program that allows you to earn reward points you can spend in the Microsoft/Xbox stores by completing in-game tasks on the service, and you can even redeem these to pay for Game Pass itself. This is part of the larger Microsoft Rewards program. In total, it's always possible to earn over 13,000 rewards points per month without spending any money. The total possible points varies, but it averages between 17K-26K per month. Reward costs:
      • 1-month Game Pass Ultimate = 12,000 points
      • 1-month Xbox Live Gold = 8,600 points
      • 1-month Game Pass for PC = 6,800 points
      • Xbox Gift Cards = varies by amount (~9,300 points per $10)
    • There are 169 titles currently on the Microsoft Play Anywhere list. If one buys a Play Anywhere game on either platform (purchase must be from the Microsoft or Xbox stores) he then owns it on both, Xbox & PC, and gameplay-- including progress and saved data-- is sync'd across both platforms. For some of these games online multiplayer cross-play between both platforms is enabled. These Play Anywhere integration perks apply to titles available on the Game Pass service, and Microsoft now includes a filter in their Game Pass & Xbox apps to find these. As of Mar-13-2021, 83 Play Anywhere titles are on Game Pass (33.2% of all PC titles on the Game Pass service).
    • Since Dec-15-2020 the EA Play service and all its games/perks (listed in the post below) has been available to Xbox users on Game Pass Ultimate at no added cost; deployment to PC users via the Ultimate or PC plans has been delayed to 2021
    • Microsoft Cloud Gaming, formerly known as Project xCloud, launched on Sep-14-2020, is bundled with Game Pass Ultimate at no additional cost, and enables the option of streaming any game on Game Pass to your Android device over WiFi or mobile networks (i.e. smartphones, tablets, and streaming TV boxes). Microsoft officially confirmed the service will be made available to iPhone/iPad users through their web browser in Spring 2021. You do not actually have to own an Xbox console to use the service. Streaming is currently 720p, but 1080p testing is already underway.
    • Game Pass Ultimate is also the cornerstone of the Xbox All Access monthly payment service that bundles the service and the next-gen Xbox console of your choice at a monthly cost; >>>click here<<< to read more about how this program works
    • Redditor "ABattleVet" maintains a God-tier spreadsheet of every game that has ever been on the Game Pass service, which platform it is on (Xbox/PC), whether it is available via xCloud, whether it is actively available on the service, if it is leaving or arriving on the service soon, its release date & age, its Metacritic score, the average number of hours to complete the campaign, and its genre according to Giant Bomb. Games also have various color codings to indicate things like console exclusivity. Simply incredible if you learn how to use filters to sort columns. Don't miss that there are multiple sheets.
    • 253 titles in the PC Game Pass catalog, currently
    • 376 titles in the Xbox Game Pass catalog, currently
    • 608 titles in the Ultimate Game Pass catalog, currently

Microsoft Xbox Live Gold
[XSX/XSS] [Xbox One] [Xbox 360]
  • $10 ---- monthly ($9.99/mo)
  • $25 ---- quarterly ($8.33/mo)
  • $40 ---- biannually ($6.67/mo)
    • Now included as part of the Game Pass service (Ultimate tier only; the Game Pass Xbox tier only includes Game Pass access; read more about Game Pass at the bottom of this post)
    • Allows online access for Xbox games (i.e. multiplayer) & cloud services; has a companion mobile app [iOS / Android]
    • Almost always just 2 free games a month, but more frequently strong selling AAA releases than with the Instant Games collection above, and unlike with the Playstation Plus giveaways, these can be downloaded and kept to be played forever (including offline) even if you discontinue subscription on the Xbox 360 though not on the Xbox One
    • According to Polygon, the total MSRP of games given out on Microsoft's Games with Gold service was $1,083 in 2020; $1,196 in 2019; $850 in 2018; $1,029 in 2017; $930 in 2016; $900 in 2015; $584 in 2014 (a $6,572 total for these years)
    • The history & catalog of games "given" away are listed in the Games with Gold Collection, which began in June 2013, and currently stands at 191 games for the Xbox 360 and 155 games for the Xbox One (all games distributed for both platforms since October 2020 are also compatible and claimable with the Xbox Series X/S)

EA Play
EA Play [XSX/XSS] [Xbox One] [PS5] [PS4]
EA Play for PC [PC] [MacOS]

  • $5 ------ monthly, EA Play ($4.99/mo); PC, Xbox* or Playstation [not all]
  • $15 ---- monthly, EA Play Pro ($14.99/mo)
  • $30 ---- yearly, EA Play ($2.50/mo)
  • $100 -- yearly, EA Play Pro ($8.33/mo)

It's been generally accepted that if you own and game on a PC it makes little sense to get the Xbox because Microsoft no longer makes any true "full" exclusives for their console, they're all released to PC, and Game Pass is available to PC users. On the other hand, that's changing, because not only may PC gamers also subscribe to PSNow, but Sony is also relinquishing its strangehold on exclusives:
More Playstation Games Coming to PC

So the flipside is that if you game on both the Xbox has the advantage of integrating your PC and Xbox gaming. In fact, a full 1/3rd of games on Game Pass are "Play Anywhere" games. As you can see above, if you buy a game once on either platform, you own it on both, and everything is sync'd. Additionally, you can use an Xbox controller with most of the major games on your PC. So you can walk back and forth between your desktop/laptop and Xbox without ever putting down a controller. Alternatively, some you can play on the Xbox using a keyboard and mouse.

PS5 has actual exclusives.

Just to expand a bit more from the perspective of someone that owns both, there’s a few other thoughts I’d like to share:

-the Xbox has 25% larger functional storage space, 800ish vs 600ish gb. I had a 2TB hard drive for my PS4 so going down to like 600gb and change is extremely frustrating as it fills up in no time

-aesthetically I like the Xbox more, though both are obnoxiously huge and difficult to integrate into a home theatre set up (ie neither fit into the slots of my TV stand and are instead on top of it flanking my TV on either side

-both are whisper quiet though I’d say the Xbox even more so BUT I find the disk drive in the Xbox louder, so if you’re going to be watching blurays on either go with the ps5

-the ps5 has a better controller with the cool haptic feedback options but it’s battery life is fucking garbage. Makes me miss the PS3 because generation after generation the PlayStation batteries seem to be getting worse and worse (ie PS3 battery life > PS4 > PS5). The Xbox uses AA batteries (or maybe its AAA, I actually can’t remember off the top of my head) so that’s kind of irritating that they’ll need to be replaced but on the flip side they last way, way longer.

-if you have any games from the 360/PS3 generation that you still want to play you may be in luck with the Xbox, but you’ll be shit out of luck with the PS5. As for games from the PS4 and One generation both the PS5 and the Series X seem to be fully backwards compatible for basically every game, though the Series X still has a few tricks up it’s sleeve such as “fps boost” and a few other optimization tweeks (eg right now I’m playing the 360 version of Halflife 2 on my series x and it has a boost to the resolution to 4K which is cool)

As I said earlier, can’t really go wrong either way.

The playstation just came out, therefore it will be obsolete by the time the next Xbox is released so you should buy both or neither.

If you've been out of gaming for a while then I don't think you will be disappointed either way.. If you have any friends that are gamers see what they have for potential multiplayer options.

I've always been a Playstation guy but I've been considering the Xbox because A) I can't find a PS5 B) I've wanted to play Forza and Halo and C) Gamepass seems pretty sweet.

Microsoft has its own "Charge and Play Kit" with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack and included USB-C cable. This makes swapping out and playing long sessions wirelessly much easier:
($24.99) Xbox One Play and Charge Kit
There are also cheaper, officially sanctioned third party products that do the same thing. The #1 seller here:
($16.82) Controller Battery Pack for Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S, BEBONCOOL 2x2550 mAh Rechargeable Battery Pack for Xbox Series X|S/Xbox One/Xbox One S/Xbox One X/Xbox One Elite Controller-Green

And that's if you don't stick to AA's which is also an option, and convenient/cheaper for those who already have a AA recharging station. On top of that, Microsoft's controllers are both forwards & backwards compatible; the Xbox One controllers work with the Series X/S, and the Series X/S controllers work with the Xbox One. So anybody who owns an Xbox One who already has their controller setup sorted has it sorted for the Series X/S.

It's linked in my post making the case for the Xbox, but it should be noted that Microsoft has been outpacing Sony by a margin of better than 2-to-1 in optimizing games for the new platform, and gifting the newer optimized version to owners of that game from the older Xbox One system. As of last October:
Xbox Smart Delivery vs. PS5 Upgrade (Updated October 17, 2020)

That's in addition to the fact unoptimized games from the previous generations also automatically work with upgraded graphics more often on the Xbox (Level 1). Developers have talked about how this takes no effort due to the coding setup of the Xbox Series X/S. Here is my FAQ explaining the confusing nature of optimizations.

If you’re not much of a gamer than the x ox may actually be the better pick. The machine is a little better and I’ve always enjoyed the controllers and the interface more.

I've always been a Playstation guy. I was on the fence this time around and was pretty much sold on Xbox based on game pass alone but was swung back to PS with the dualsense and their strong showing at launch. I've thought about getting a Xbox still but I just cant really justify it based on the amount of time I play games now. Maybe when they have some killer exclusives.

If your not really a gamer and haven't played games in a long time than the PS5 is pretty much a no brainer. You'll be able to play all the best exclusives from PS3\PS4\ and then PS5. I'm talking games that are considered must play games.

i wouldn't get either unless/until you can easily pick one up for retail price and there's actually a few current-gen games for it that you want to play.

Gotta say, I've been thinking of jumping ship to PS5 after spending the past two gens with Xbox but with the moves Microsoft has been making lately I'm starting to reconsider. May just try to get a PS4 on the cheap to play some of those sweet exclusives from yesteryear while upgrading my Xbone to XSX

If he hasn't gamed in years he has no reason to wait for current gen games. He can start right away with TLOU. Waiting till you can get it in a store though is something he might not even have a choice but to do.

by that logic, he'd be better off with a ps4, then.

If he's not much of a gamer (or doesn't play often) wouldn't the PS5 make more sense? It's way cheaper to be a PS+ member, he'll get a bunch of games immediately for free and that should be satisfactory. Buy a game here and there and enjoy monthly free games from the PS+ Plus subscription. If he's a new gamer and wants to play more games then the Xbox and Gamepass is the way to go.

Never owned an Xbox, have always been a PlayStation guy. Their exclusives are worth the console IMO. There are just too many to name.

But, there are some games I really want to play on Xbox that will be exclusive to their console in the near future.

I have a PS5, but I will be picking up both. Great games will come from both this generation and I don’t want to miss them. I view it the same as I view streaming apps. Netflix has shows I enjoy, Disney+ has others and HBOMax has more. I don’t want to limit myself. I could also really care less about the fandom between the two. Who cares.
