here are some photos of fighters known for taking massive shots straight to the dome without being rendered unconscious

what are the similarities here? Are there any? from what I can tell, having a square, defined jawline and a fairly thick neck seem to help. What are your observations?

I agree with your analasys. However, I do recall reading somewhere that it is a mistery why some people have a good chin or not. Like Doctors don't even know!

honestly, I think a fighters ability to absorb punishment has a LOT to do with their state of mind

Short neck - Mark Hunt
Strong neck muscles - Anyone with a big skull to support
Thick skull - Fujita/Leben
Big strong chin - BJ/Hendo
Good centre of mass - Nelson/Hunt
Roll with punches - Anderson
Genetics that cant be explained - All of the above

Aside from technique, I imagine it has far more to do with the way your brain is made up or sits in your skull than things like chin shape. I'd also bet past history is a major factor too.

Big head, jutting or wide jaw, and thick neck.

Good reflexes are not necessarily what the thread starter means by a "physical characteristic", but I think they explain part of the reason why Anderson and Condit are rarely affected by their opponents' punches and kicks. They roll with those attacks effortlessly.

There is no special characteristic. Some guys can just take better shots than others. You want a secret how to improve your chances of not getting knocked out? Keep your hands up, your chin tucked, move your head, and shoot for the take down when necessary. That is as logical as it gets.

I can do without the condescending comment

now list and provide pics of guys who have extremely fragile chins

I think you are on to something though

some guys naturally roll with punches because they are blessed with exceptional reflexes...albeit anderson and condit have improved their ability to roll with big shots they probably had good reflexes to begin with

chewing a lot of bubble gum -- not sure about blowing bubbles though

Didn't actually realize I was being condescending. Just trying to state facts. Many of those fighters you posted have different head, chin, and neck structures. There is not much of a theory. Once again don't take this the wrong way, but hasn't hunt been ko'd twice and once was by a welterweight?

imo mental strength has to do with it too
and the ability to look at your opponents at all times even while getting hit.

most ko's happen when fighters don't see the punch

Thread isn't about being able to take punishment as in from gnp, is about being able to take hard shots without being rendered unconscious and, if you think that had anything to do with "state of mind" then just... wow

One of the greatest chins in the history of combat sports (if not the greatest) explains it
