Does anybody know if Chuck Norris did weight training before meeting Bruce Lee/creating Total Gym? To be honest, he doesn't look that muscular but then again his bodyfat is not extremely low like Brucie's or any other bodybuilders so you can't really tell-if you see his overall size and when he is closer to the 10% mark (most notably when fighting Bruce), you can see that he is a meaty fighting machine.

Did Chuck do any weight training before meeting Bruce/creating the total gym?

Also, do you think he's the ultimate fighter-imao he is because he knows JKD like Bruce but also because he is a 7 times World Karate Champion and was given a Brown Belt in BJJ; add that to his dabbling in other martial arts and overall size and I think that he is someone not to be f*cked with-that and the fact the Chuck Norris facts have somehow convinced me that he's a mean motherf*cker!

do you think he's the ultimate fighter

lol, A lot of people cross train...

I can't tell if this is a serious thread or not...

ok-please don't put joke answers in-

seriously though, he's pretty big and ripped when he cuts weight

I personally think he's one of the best fighters in the world;

Chuck Norris has a black belt in both Tang So Do Karate and Tae Kwon Do and even created Chuck Kuk Do-a martial art based on Shotokan Karate,Tang So do,Wing Chun (taught by Bruce) and Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (of which Chuck has a brown belt).

His tournament record:

ALMOST CERTAIN: 65 wins-5 losses
UNOFFICIALLY RECORDED: 183 wins-12 draws-2 losses

Chuck Norris will always have the advantage due to his extra fist

Since when did Chuck Norris need to work out at all?

He's fucking Chuck Norris.

Serious answer -- back when I was training in karate I spent a lot of time reading, and I was fairly knowledgeable about Norris and other late 60s tournament stars.

I don't recall ever reading anything about Norris being a big advocate of lifting. He may have done some -- his physique in Return of the Dragon suggests it.

For what it's worth, the American martial arts practitioners from that era whom I associate with weight training are Bruce Lee, Joe Lewis and Donn Draeger. Draeger's 1962 book "Judo Training Methods" was one of the first (maybe the first) English-language book on martial arts that included a lot of info about weight training. Last time I checked, the book was still in print, too.

If you were to dig up tons of old martial arts magazine articles on Norris, you might find some references to him doing weights. It wouldn't surprise me, because he was an innovative and open-minded fighter.

Here's an example...

One thing that a lot of people don't realize is that he was supposedly one of the first U.S. tournament fighters who really worked at developing good technique with punches AND kicks -- supposedly it was mostly an either/or thing prior to Norris. He was a Tang Soo Do stylist and had done a lot of kicking in his training. To improve his well-roundedness he got together with Japanese stylists (I think Fumio Demura was one) and worked a lot on his punching technique.

That situation kind of mirrors what would happen later when he studied jiu jitsu with the Machados. And of course, Norris was one of the few established U.S. martial artists who encouraged and supported Rorion Gracie when he arrived in America in the mid-80s.
