What is difference: Gracie Barra JJ & Gracie JJ

barra gracie is an academy (gym) located in barra da tijuca neighborhood in rio de janeiro. it is a top school, and large, with many subsidiaries across the globe. escorrega is a good fighter from this school (not one of the TOP, because since it

just a small add-in to my comment:
when I said that gracie barra and humaita are not so good in MMA, I didn

I'm not 100% with you on that. GB has a fundamentals program where they focus on basics and do self defense moves. Furthermore, I've heard mixed things about schools that claim to be "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" affiliates. I've heard of schools being run by blue belts and the like, or guys that teach other martial arts primarily but have a "certification" in GJJ from some program they attended, and then call themselves a Gracie Jiu Jitsu school.

Focusing on basics and self defense early on is great, but quality matters as well.

+1. This is the thing that sucks about where I live. Theres the place thats affiliated but the guy is probably a blue belt and then has his own made up belt as well.

Valid point, some of the Gracie academy instructors just go to the training and then start teaching whereas others have a ton of experience.

I use to train with GB for about a year, great group, great training but depending where u are in the cycle you could miss a lot of the basics.

I train at a Gracie Barra school in the Seattle area and would highly suggest it. When I started we were just an affiliate school so we didn't really follow the GB curriculum. We just became an official school, so were working in the curriculum but I can definitely see the benefit in the structure it provides.

As far as I know the curriculum/structure is new in the last few years anyway. I'm a fairly new blue belt so that's just based on what I've heard.

GB advertises as jiu jitsu for everyone, and they mean it. They teach young/old male/female sport/self defense. In my area they do gi and no gi and even offer kickboxing/mma type classes.

I'm extremely biased, but I would go with Gracie Barra if I were you. Especially learning under a world champion black belt.

As a side benefit of training at a GB school I'm of the understanding that you can train at any GB school if you travel at all and there are a lot of them. I haven't put this to the test though.

PM me if you have any questions.

I attend a Rickson Gracie affiliate and it's def more self-defense oriented. Royler also visits our school once a year. We have both Rickson and Gracie Humaita stickers on the doors. A lot of competitors at our school but nothing too fancy technique-wise.

the head instructor at my gracie barra trained under Master Carlos Gracie Junior and received his black belt from him in brazil. It also says he's a 3rd degree black belt.

Lol dude, I bet he's referring to Marcio Feitosa or Flavio Almeida, both of whom are advertised on many GB sites but not quite the "head instructor" figure you'd think of.

My school was a Gracie Barra, the instructor was a black belt under Braulio Estima. Braulio and Victor would come up for seminars and to award belts.

The school's website says otherwise. Seems legit.

I really don't like the corporate franchise aspect of Gracie Barra. I'm surprised that no one has touched on this yet, as it is an important thing to consider.

It all comes down to the instructor. I work at a Gracie Barra and am the first to admit I don't like all the franchise rules. But I have incredible instructors at my school and we have a a great atmosphere.

If you have a great instructor it doesn't matter what patch is on the gi. Try a class at both schools and see what is a better fit for you
