i have seen this idea bantered around the UFC forum, a fair bit (not surprised, they are a silly bunch). I was however a bit surprised to see this "theory" in the boxing forum. Can someone please explain what a "lucky" punch is.

I guess, if you are putting two guys into a ring to knock each other out, there really isn't such a thing as a lucky punch. So, the term just means when a guy who is outclassed, or being badly beaten lands a punch that just played the odds. It's what makes boxing a different sport, just about anyone has a chance. Sometimes a punch just lands perfectly, sometimes a fighter moves right into a punch, sometimes, he just doesn't see it, sometimes he gets too cocky, hence; lucky punch.

One where the fighter is getting comprehensively beaten and outclassed but lands one punch that completely changes the outcome of the fight. Julian Jackson vs. Herrol Graham is a good example.

I guess when the other fighter makes an out of character mistake, a punch that never would have landed when the fighter is using his normal defensive skills? Sometimes a fighter is outclassed despite his best efforts, other times he makes a big mistake and his opponent capitalizes on it.

In other sports there are genuinely lucky plays where you meant to do A and instead did B. For example hitting the net cord in tennis, you didn’t mean to hit the net that was an error on your part but as a result of that error the ball might ricochet and land somewhere that wrong foots your opponent.

In boxing there is no real accident. You threw a punch and it landed. When people say it though I sort of know what they mean; it’s usually a big punch against the run of play or a puncher who is otherwise vastly outskilled manages to connect.

Probably shouldn’t really be called a lucky punch though.

I would say that graham was lucky up until that point, not to get cracked. When one of the most dangerous punchers ever, catches a guy and ko's them with one shot, luck doesn't have a lot to do with it.

Also the commentator had already mentioned graham pulling straight back from shots if I remember correctly.

Its the punch that KO's your favorite fighter.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz maybe? Lol ‍♂️

Possibly. But on the other hand Graham had to survive just one round not getting clipped and the fight would most likely have been stopped. Graham was a defensive wizard. But he zigged when he should have zagged.

It’s hard. And took a while to think, but there are a few examples of lucky punches

Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz

Jack Johnson vs. Stanley Ketchel

Over a hundred years ago I know lol. In those days people didn’t want quick knockouts. They wanted the fights to be a full length motion picture. It’s why a lot of Jack Johnson’s fights almost in a way look like sparring sessions. Yet Ketchel saw an opportunity to try and snake him and went for it. Unfortunately for him, Jack Johnson recovered and made him pay big time lol. I’d say Stanley Ketchel landed a lucky punch in that fight

I know I’m probably gonna get some shit for this one lol. Probably should keep my mouth shut, it’s heavily up for debate, but I think luck was on Lennox Lewis’s side in the Vitali Klitschko fight. Sure the cuts were bad, sure Lennox finished the 6th round on top, but he was still barely hanging on. I think if they let that go a couple more rounds Vitali would’ve gotten a tko win. An interesting time in both their careers though. Before Vitali was at his best, after Lennox was at his. If there was a rematch I think Vitali would’ve annihilated him

It’s the exact fight I was thinking of and I do kind of agree. However, I still dont think it’s a lucky punch. And Jackson could floor guys with grazing shots!

He was desperate, and close to being stopped, but his eyes were on the target and he timed herol. Had he been head down, whinging wild hopeful looping shots, I’d say it was a lucky punch.

I don’t think it happens very often at all in high level boxing because of the skill level. It’s much more common in MMA, and I think that’s also due to the size/weight of the gloves

I’m a massive fan of Lewis but there was nothing lucky about that dude. Lewis got complacent 2 (possibly 3) times in his career and paid the price on both occasions

Nothing lucky about it? lewis had his hands down, smiled, and got koed. It is the definition of lucky punch win. Rahman couldn't even touch Lewis in the rematch. If they fight 100 times and Lewis takes him seriously 100 times, it is 100-0 to Lewis
