What happened to Renan Barao?

TJ Dillashaw x2 happened. He was the same Barao as always when he fought TJ.

TJ just murdered him. He hasn't been the same since.

This. TJ took his soul. It actually is pretty similar to the Rousey situation where one loss just shattered them mentally and they never recovered.

he is still young but has 30+ fights on him

besides, TJ really did damage on him: body and mind

This.

I don’t think people get that most fighters don’t have a very long ‘peak’ in this industry, fighting, training, all of that takes a toll. He started off really young too. So he had his time at the top, unfortunately based on yesterdays fight, I don’t think he has it to get back there anymore. He looked really slow compared to what he used to be, he doesn’t look to use his grappling, his strikes have sort of become predictable.

At his best, he was one of the best. But that window only lasted a short time. There’s others like this. Rashad comes to mind.

Respect to him for his career, but, it’s time he fought some lesser quality opponents or guys at the “tailend” of their careers like him. Just because he is like 30 doesn’t mean he’s still young in the fight game. He’s had a lot of miles put on his body and the smaller fighters generally can’t continue fighting till their 40 and have success because of speed.

Well over 40 pro fights and of course that means more than 40 training camps. Has been fighting as a pro for nearly 15 years now.

But sure, USADA even though he's never popped, never been flagged, never had to rely on the "tainted supplements" excuses so many fighters use these days.

The TC Dillashaw beating completely took the fight out of him.

What the hell happened to him?

He went from a super dominant sniper on the feet with a solid ground game to can't seem to win a fight.

He's different from someone like Ronda, whereas anyone with half a brain knew that she was dominant primarily due to the lack of talent in her division at the time.
Barao was a legit badass. Fought some solid dudes and wrecked them, now he can't buy a win.

What are your thoughts on his downfall?

USADA, psychological, was always overrated etc.
I believe he works at Zippys Tacos in Austin.

The problem with fighting or so long and in the top is that everyone have seen you fighting for a long time. Yesterday a lot of the punches landed did so because Kelleher knew what was Barao going to do. People develops patterns hard to shake off, and after years being at the top people have been looking for those patterns to beat you and at some point they find it. That's why fighters should change camps after a while, so they can change their patterns, unless your camp is good enough to do it for themselves.

Holloway said it: he's been looking at aldo's fights since he started training MMA, he's being training to beat Aldo since he began training!

The same happens to every fighter against "newer" ones, the difference is weather the top dog can adapt faster than the competition.

Also, after losing the gold it is hard to get the hunger back.

For those saying USADA, they are crazy. Barao looks in good shape, as good as before USADA.

I think it's a combination of the following:

  • he was always a bit overrated because of his strong record; we now know that Jorgensen was on the decline when they fought, Wineland was beating Barao before the spectacular finish, and taking 4 rounds to beat a 22-year old Mayday McDonald doesn't look so good in hindsight
  • a post-TJ decline; they were combined almost an hour of a complete beatdown, in which he ate over 250 significant strikes
  • natural wear and tear -- he started at age 18 and had 25 fights in less than 5 years before joining the WEC
  • a possible post-USADA decline
  • competition is better now than when it was when he was coming up, and he's failed to move with the times

He didn't look like himself since that bathtub rage.

It is strange but there's a few things in play.

1. He's old in fight years. While he's only 30 (turns 31 in two days), he's been fighting (and training) professionally for 13 years and has 41 fights under his belt. That shit takes a toll. Your body can only handle so much.
2. Piggybacking a bit off of #1, I think making the weight has become more and more difficult for him and it's ruined his cardio. Dude is mouth breathing towards the end of round 1 in every fight now.
3. He wasn't quite as good as his record suggested. People constantly fall for padded records, it's why they became so prevalent in boxing. "Holy shit!! That dude is 30-1!" - well, 23 of those came against guys no one has heard of.
4. The TJ fights. To be so dominant for so long and then to get utterly destroyed twice by the same guy can really mess with your psyche.

LOL I swear I didn't read your post before posing mine.

i feel he is having weight cut issues
could be usada ban on iv

He's different from someone like Ronda, whereas anyone with half a brain knew that she was dominant primarily due to the lack of talent in her division at the time.

The two women currently fighting for the belt were both in the division during Ronda's run. The division isn't any more talented now.

Combination of USADA and T.J. breaking him in a way that made it easier for others to do so. Those two fights with T.J. seemed to drastically lower his confidence and belief in himself. Now guys that would've stood no chance before aren't afraid of him and they're approaching him like any other opponent now that his mystique is gone.
