Shocked to see how readily a lot of the US posters in this forum accept the notion that journalists should dance the Zuffa beat or stfu. What?

Whatever happened to the free press, freedom of speech, independent journalism?

This is not about one particular mma journalist, when companies own the press, we are back to Barnum's circus: there's a sucker born every minute.

EDIT: the press pass was merely the tip of the iceberg, assaults and intimidations and being on their payroll were alledgedly among Zuffas ways of controlling the press.

EDIT 2: private companies can of course curtail employee freedom of expression. But when Zuffa pays journalists, Zuffa controls the free press. That needs to be discussed.

Ariel has freedom of speech. The problem nowadays is that people don't seem to understand that freedom of speech isn't freedom from reprecussion.

Just because there exists such a thing as freedom of speech doesn't mean everyone has to like or respect what a person has to say.

He's free to say what he wants to, just as UFC is free to not give him free tickets and backstage access.

I totally support Ariel, but the UFC is a personally owned business and they're free to do whatever they want with their business and decide who gets passes and who doesn't and that includes being complete dicks, which they are.

It's embarrassing. People are jaded by danas cuss words and bro tactics. They think he's so super cool because he calls people :eek::eek:s that they will just take his word as gospel. Pathetic.

Of course not, but we are seeing physical threats, journalists paid by Zuffa, and much larger issues than revoking press credentials here. The bottom line is that Zuffa is having success with directing the press. Is this the kind of country you want?

Note to self: wrong forum?

That has nothing to do with the point of this thread.

Freedom of the press is a right guaranteed against infringement by the government, not private companies

There's no public interest to protect here, so we don't need that kind of journalism.

It's like if some guy posted all the news and stories about you. Like you get a promotion at your job and he's tweeting all your friends, your parents, your girlfriend, breaking the news to them first. If you cut that guy off so he didn't have access to that info anymore, would you be doing some outrageous chilling of the press? No, right? Because we don't need someone reporting on your life, informing people of your news. There's no public interest there.

Now if the government's actions, which inherently affect millions of people, were being kept secret and they were controlling and chilling media coverage of it, that would be a huge cause for concern. But when it's only a private interest at stake, suddenly that kind of journalism feels more intrusive than beneficial. It all turns on the interest at stake. Here, there's no public interest, so we feel less inclined to promote the freedom of the press to publish stories against the private interests of the covered parties. We feel more sympathetic to those interests. And if you do go against those interests, we feel they are justified to do what they can to cut off contact with you.

This isn't about that. Look into the deeper issues here.

This all of the way.

Freedom of speech is a right. Press credential is a privilege. Ariel had his privilege revoked. Nobody violated his free speech. The dude cried cause he's a hyper sensitive beta.

Liberal pussies (eg. Bernie supporters) hate free speech and anyone who invades their delusional bubble.

Yes it is. The UFC is a privately owned business they can close the door on anybody they want. It's the same as trying to pull the free speech card on the Sherdog forums.

No public interest? Are you trolling me? I hope you are. So the press should write whatever the big companies want them to? Great idea.

Free speech is the right not to be prosecuted for it by the government.
Speaking badly about a private entity is still going to have repercussions.
Nothing illegal there.

HAhahahaha some of you noobs understand nothing. You know he's still free to say w/e the fuck he wants, right? If you let someone into your house and he repays you by talking shit, are you gonna continue to let him in? Come on... Has nothing to do with freedom of speech.
