What exactly is a "stacked card"?

Seems like a lot of unknown fighters are unknown because they aren't good and got into UFC via being late replacement or having 5-0 record in smaller show beating scrubs.

The exception was Louis Smolka's UFC debut where he had skills and was fearless.

Hi Louis

Can I have an action packed fight with big names?

Just because a guy doesn't have a name doesn't mean he'll fight well. In fact they might want to fight safer because losses really suck if you're trying to build a name for yourself and sometimes it's better to win than to be exciting. Not everyone can be Joe Lauzon

This, in the real world that rarely happens. Not being a name doesn't mean it will be a good fight, it's up to the matchmakers to do a good job(which they don't).

Usually it is just lame filler fights

Example of a stack card will be:

PPV Fight Card
Main Event: Cain Velasquez (C) v. Alistair Overeem
Co-Main Event: Anthony Pettis (C) v. Gilbert Melendez
Ronda Rousey (C) v. Gina Carano
Jon Jones (C) v. Daniel Cormier
Johny Hendrix (C) v. Nick Diaz
FS1 Prelim Fight Card
Main Event: Jose Aldo (C) v. Erik Perez
Co-Main Event: TJ Dillashaw (C) v. Urijah Faber
Mighty Mouse (C) v. Joseph Benavidez
women straw weight champion v. #1 contender
Fight Pass Fight Card
Chris Weidman (C) v. Michael Bisping

peoples definition of a stacked card is like the co main event

to me a stacked card is somthing like the pride fc shockwave events or pride bushido 9

thats a stacked event not rousey vs some female

I love people who put stacked card nowadays should be all the fucking champions and all the big names like there is 1 card per year. C'mon, even UFC 100 wasn't that stacked.

Lesnar vs Mir, GSP vs Alves, Hendo vs Bisping, great top fights. Then Fitch vs Thiago and Sexyama vs Belecher, OK.

It's a great card sure and has big names, but how well known and established were Jones and Miller, how about Dong Hyum King then?

It's more about the names rather than talent, also match ups stylistcally.

The reality it's that there is a lot more fighters now and less hype, which fighters like Ronda (which thanks to her brought WMMA to UFC like it or not) and McGOAT who just fought in the prelims now Main events a fight pass card on dublin, his hometown, and has Countdown. Tell me that's not getting the job done.

Same with no name fighters. There's been a lot of shitty no name fights

Right. So what's the difference who gets a PPV slot? It's not like anyone in that slot gets a PPV cut.

Ultimately the fight CAN suck regardless of whether the fighters are "name" fighters or not.

Nope.

Weidman/Machida
Rousey defending her belt
Sonnen/Wanderlei or Belfort
Struve/Mitrione

Is one hell of a lineup. I don't care how cool and contrary you are.

This is a very good card. All cards should be something like this. Meaning there should be way fewer cards with crappier fights buried on prelims.

Let's get real.

"Stacked" means "give me the same fights, but do it with HALF the events".

That would create some serious stacked-ass cards, right there.

You know it's true.

People want to see big names. It's really that simple my man. You tried to give an ultimatum but like you said we don't know what happens until the fight, so we're looking at big names vs no names, which do you think makes a stacked card?

You think a card full of irrelevant prelim fighters would be a stacked card?

Obviously it's going to come down to star power and the divisional relevance of the fighters, which usually go hand in hand. Fights that mean something, not fights to pass time

Either. Many big ticket marquee fights and fighters or many exciting matchups regardless of star power.

FOX 12 coming up is a good example of the latter - the final 7 fights in a row should be competitive and exciting. Despite that the card lacks a title fight or any previous UFC champions and only one immediately impactful fight rankings-wise, you could call it stacked. Especially for a free card

But I'd rather have a fight with meaning to it if I need to pay for it? Leave the no names on the prelims until they make a name for themselves

Marcus Brimage was 3-1 in the UFC and was only known for losing to McGregor but he gets on the PPV? That's a weak card

Strikeforce had some of the most stacked cards ever, full of ranked fighters and big name, even on the undercard.

I gave no ultimatum...

I'm just trying to see what people mean by "stacked" which also tells me what they mean by "watered down".

I care about the actual fights. "Stacked" card or "watered down" card. I don't give fuck who it is, personally. A dude/chick professionally getting thir ass beat, is a dude/chick professionally getting their ass beat regardless of "name".

90% of the fights don't REALLY mean shit, when you actually think about it.

"Yay you won a #1 contender fight .... but you didn't get a finish so you gotta try again."

"Yay you won another #1 contender fight ... but the champ is injured so now you have to fight another fight while he gets better."

"Welp, you lost that fight while the champ was getting better. Back to the end of the line."

Rankings don't matter. "Hey 'boring' #4 ranked LHW! Fight this unranked monster from another org so that if you lose, we can replace you in the hierarchy and make his next fight against a guy that pulls out of 70% of his fights!"

What constitutes a stacked card varies a bit depending on how big the matches are. I don't throw the "stacked card" term around lightly. To me, a card is stacked if you could take the main event off the card and it would still be a card worth buying to most fans. Something like a card that has 2 title fights and 2 other top 10 vs top 10 lvl fights on it, or a title fight and 4 top 10 vs top 10 lvl fights.

UFC 100 was stacked - 2 title fights and 2 fights pitting top 10 lvl fighters against each other.
