What ever happened to Steven Mazzagatti?

Must have realized it was time to retire when Josh Burkman literally did his job for him against Fitch.

This is an old thread, but I live in China and just saw this on tv.

I still see him at UFC events during fights, I think he still works for the commissions but obviously just doesn't referee anymore

He had a particularly bad fight where he let it go way too long. I can't recall which fight right now, but everyone went batshit crazy and it was the last straw. I believe Dana even said later that "you will never see Mazagatti in the UFC again" or some such thing. I'm sure someone will come up with the video sooner or later. Maybe on Contender series?

At the grocery store: "some milk, fuckin' eggs, bread"

In his head of course, while someone's life is in his hands (in danger)

Pretty sure you're referring to Burkman vs. Fitch. Which wasn't actually in the UFC, but Dana did react that way to it. Basically, Burkman choked Fitch the fuck out and Mazzagatti had no idea what was going on. He wasn't watching in closely at all, he was acting like nothing major was happening in the fight. And then Burkman just dropped Fitch's limp body like a sack of potatoes and Mazzagatti was shocked.

As far as I can tell, Mazzagatti basically just referees kickboxing/muay Thai matches now. He's been a KB/MT ref for a LONG time now, I've seen him ref a lot of fights and he actually does a good job, but he sucks ass in MMA. It seems pretty obvious he never studied the grappling aspect and he looks lost when fights hit the ground. He also doesn't handle the unique aspects of MMA well, like eye pokes.

His stoppage of the Pablo Garza fight is my favourite ref-stoppage of all-time. Someone post the gif I’m on my phone and I can never figure that shit out.

It's interesting to see which officials are politcially connected and which aren't.

Guys like Mazzagatti and Yamasaki have been blackballed, but other total incompetents like Adelaide Byrd, Chris Lee and Sal D'Amato continue to work.

Adelaide Byrd is the one person that I've seen Dana reticent to criticize. He was asked directly about her judging at a UFC card right after the first Canelo/GGG fight, and his response was just something to the effect of "yeah, she's working tonight" before changing the subject.
Yeah but why is that? Can’t see how that fucktard Byrd is more connected than Dana or at least how the NSAC + Byrd mushroom stamps Dana. Weird.

Yep. That looks like it (note the comments on the YouTube video). I know Mazagatti had let fights go too far a few other times before this too. He was already on his way out I think.

PS - I'm on my phone too and used to have the same problem, but I figured it out eventually. :)

Yeah, and Brock was also pissed at Mazzagatti for his late stoppage during the first Mir fight where Brock was frantically tapping and Mazzagatti still didn't see it somehow. Brock refused to let him referee any of his fights after that. So the combination of Dana and arguably the sport's biggest draw being dead set against him, plus the obvious fighter safety issues, did him in.

I remember Dana's hilarious rants about this guy. "This guy should be no where near the fights, he shouldn't even be allowed to watch fighting"
