Filipinos and Samoans are extremely similar ethnically. Most Hawaiians I know identify with Samoa, but are Filipino ethnically. Don't know how pure Samoans feel about that.

As someone who lives in a (primarily Ilocano) Filipino community in Hawaii, none of this makes sense to me.

Hawaiians and Samoans are similar ethnically. Not Filipinos. And I've never met an ethnic Hawaiian identify with Samoa. Samoans, Tongans and Hawaiians are all proud of their own islands and identities.

You're a smart guy Dasp, but you've been misled on this topic.

There are lots of different Filipino ethnic groups, which makes sense since it is an island chain. They range from Ilocano, Cebuano, Tagolog, Visayan, Kapampangan, Waray and more all with distinct languages as cultures. Do you know what kind of Filipinos you met out there? I know Vegas has a decent Filipino population.
