what does the devil look like?

Isn't it kind of known now that these allegations of a Satan and apocalypse are actually in reference to Roman Emperor Nero since he was so cruel?

When I was a child I always thought that if you saw the devil it would be some kind of despicable monster.

I think if the devil were to come at you it would be something really appealing and seductive. It would probably take a different form to reflect the needs of the subject it is trying to corrupt.

The insidious nature of the devil's power is based in deceit, so it would have greater success appearing as a beautiful woman than a hideous monster.

I was of the understanding that Lucifer and the Devil were separate entities ?
From what I understand the name "Lucifer" was used to replace "morning star".

Isaiah 14:12 from the New International Version

How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

Isaiah 14:12 from the King James

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Lucifer means "light bringer" or "light bearer".

The only reason I can come up with for this was to differentiate between Satan before and after his fall.

Christ is referred to as the "the Bright and Morning Star" so I think Lucifer was a title used by the translator to avoid possible confusion but that's just a guess.

"(28) The morning star.--The pledge of the coming day, both for the waiting witnesses, and for the ungodly, who loved darkness because their deeds were evil: the earnest of the sovereignty of light over darkness, when the children of the day would be manifest, and shine as the stars for ever and ever (Daniel 12:3)."

"Verse 28. - I will give him the morning star. In Revelation 22:16 Christ himself is "the Bright and Morning Star." Therefore here he promises to give himself to him that overcometh. The morning star has ever been proverbial for brightness and beauty, and, as the harbinger of the day, is the bringer of light, life, and joy. Moreover, a star is often a sign of royalty: "There shall come a star out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel" (Numbers 24:17); and as such it appeared to the Wise Men (Matthew 2:2)."

Regarding what he looks like we know he was referred to as a serpent, the Great Red Dragon, Leviathan the twisted/fleeing/crooked/piercing serpent.

We also know that he was an angel and all the serpent titles lends one to believe that he was a seraph or one of the seraphim.

Seraphim

"Mentioned in Isaiah 6:2, 3, 6, 7. This word means fiery ones, in allusion, as is supposed, to their burning love. They are represented as "standing" above the King as he sat upon his throne, ready at once to minister unto him. Their form appears to have been human, with the addition of wings. (see ANGELS.) This word, in the original, is used elsewhere only of the "fiery serpents" (Numbers 21:6, 8; Deuteronomy 8:15; Comp. Isaiah 14:29; 30:6) sent by God as his instruments to inflict on the people the righteous penalty of sin. "

Another indicator is Jesus's description of Satan's fall.

"And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

"Seraphim are in Jewish theology connected with cherubim and ophanim as the three highest orders of attendants on Yahweh, and are superior to the angels who are messengers sent on various errands. As the cherubim in popular fancy were represented by the storm-clouds, so the seraphim were by the serpentine flashes of the lightning; but none of this appears in Isaiah's vision."

To make a pop culture reference if anyone has played Final Fantasy 7 you would know the protagonist is Cloud Strife and the antagonist is Sephiroth.

Cherubim were represented as storm-clouds or clouds in strife (Cloud Strife) and Sephiroth sounds really close to seraph or seraphim, not to mention Sephiroth's final form is basically the description of a Seraphim.

Numbers 23 6:9

6And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 7Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 8And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

As a kid I had two dreams with Satan in them. In one I looked out of the kitchen window of my family's house to the tree line at the end of the back yard. It was dark and lightly snowing outside. Light from the kitchen windows was falling on the snow in the yard. There were small dark spots in the snow. As I looked closer to the house I noticed they were hoof prints that scorched the earth. The prints came up to the kitchen windows. Satan was standing below. He looked human from the waist up. Bearded, horribly scarred face, curled black hair. He had the lower half of a goat. His entire body was slicked in blood. He had eyes like a wolf. He just stood and stared at me with a piercing gaze. I woke up scared as hell.

In the second dream, I dreamed that I was asleep and "woke up" to find Satan standing at the foot of my bed staring at me. It was a dream within a dream. He looked the same as he did in my first dream. When I actually woke up I was afraid that I'd actually see him standing in my room. I sat in bed with a small lamp on for a while after that.

Edit: I forgot to mention that he seemed to give off an intense heat.

The opposite of this?

The iconic cartoonish version of Satan we all know so well is that he is red, horned, and half goat.

Red symbolizes sin.

He is depicted as a horned goat to oppose Jesus who is the meek Lamb.

John 1:29
29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

On the Day of Atonement one of two goats was ascribed all sin and was called Azazel (the scape goat) and symbolized the separation of sin from righteousness which could also be why the devil is depicted as goat-like and red = sin.

http://biblehub.com/topical/a/azazel.htm

Notice that even though Darkness is red, horned and goat-like the serpent bases are still covered by his serpent like eyes and cobra fangs.

Well, depends on who you ask, that topic has been debated for a long time. There is this.

Satan is the Devil, though whether or not he was named Lucifer before his fall is a matter of debate. It seems widely accepted in modern Christianity that Satan and Lucifer are one in the same, however it appears that Lucifer was mistranslated as being Satan.

First, In Isaiah 14:12 in the KJV we read: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” Modern translations—except for the NKJV—have something like “day star” or “morning star” instead of “Lucifer” here.

If we are referring to Lucifer then he would be the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. Virtually irresistible. The red devil Hollywood version of the devil would not be accurate at all.

Lucifer was an Archangel as well as the most beautiful angel. Humans would be ill equipped to deal with him because virtually everyone would bend to his will. I can't even find an image that would best represent his beauty. He would be the embodiment of both evil and beauty at the same time.

He’s a deceptor. So never how you might think. In my opinions.

You hit the nail on the head. Funny how no one regards the truth you point out from scripture. Completely opposite of what everyone in this thread has said "anything but beautiful"

The sheer volume of those who completely disregard him. (Scoffers & Mockers) goes to show how many have fallen to him already.

Adam and Eve (who were superior to us in every way possible) succumbed to his lies (intelligence)

Still to this day his deception ensnares many. The various *ism(s)* , all world religions, governments, people that deny Jesus Christ, dishonest intellectual pursuits in science, power, pride, rationale and the list could go on ad nausem.

It's actually sad to see so many third rock from the sun, Big Bang, yolo mfers up in here getting bent over the table by him, but obviously think they are bigly smart.
