People like to watch titleshots for a reason: the belt means something which is directly related to being one of the very best. So, we want our favorite fighters to get that symbol. However people are missing that the less we make it about skill and more about popularity, the belt loses it's value.
Yeah, most of us get that it's a business AND a sport, so it's not just about the rankings, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have limits to that. What's your thoughts ?
I don't want to make this just about Bisping vs Hendo, although they're certainly a great example of that, there are certainly more to come. But here I go: First, Bisping gets the ts to save the card, that is, for business reasons. He wins... but remember that mmamath doesnt work, so he doesn't automatically becomes superior to the guys Luke beat. Then Hendo... I'm still amazed about the amount of support he's getting to leapfrog a dozen after looking mediocre old and trtless.
Think about it, if titleshots can get scheduled without any current skill merit all of the time, that means the then current title holder does not translate as a best or maybe not even among the best in the category, since that would be based on mmamath. So the belt holder is a paper champion, because it translates so little skill wise, as he leapfrogged a dozen.

War Bisping the champ.

The irony of that is: Why people didn't ask for the rematch before ? Because they like the idea of what the championship stands for.. being the best - which clearly wouldn't be the case here anyway.

Weak divisions can kind of make the belt meaningless.

What does it take for a post to become meaningless?

When someone wins the belt, moves up a division, loses for a non title fight. Then gets a re match while not defending the belt he has?

What does it take for the belt to become meaningless?

Answer: Conor McGregor needs to have won it, and then refuse to defend it, leading to an interim title fight during his "in perfect health" absence ...

It loses meaning when the "champ" doesn't fight in the weight class and has no plans to ever do so again.

Random title shots, title shot after a loss, interm belts when health is not an issue.

None of these have best vs best, which is what is supposed to be the case in a title fight.

Want to make belts meaningless just do what boxing has done. There are multiple belts in every weight class due to all of the sanctioning bodies. It pisses me off that they continue to not get past that.

Anyway you want to see champions defend against the best and most deserving. We know fan interest and how money talks is a big thing. Many fans right in this forum have said they care more about the fights they want to see rather than the belts.

I dont think the belt will ever become meaningless but your going to gave your share of undeserving but popular title shots that will happen from time to time.It is what it is.Jacare is probably the best mw right now but because his fight style agsinst strikers is to make them carry his weight until he gets the sub or decision is not a popular watch amongst THE AVERAGE CAGE FIGHT FAN.It is what it is.
Look what he just did to Vitor. That was impressive.I actually thought he beat Romero and im not a Jacare fan.Mousasi had to carry Jacare s weight for 3 rounds and defended well before he finally gave in and Gegard much more of a beast than Vitor.

They want the fights they want to see AND the belt. That's where they're fooling themselves. I'm all for people valuing more non title fights - that's part of what makes casuals spoil titleshots.

When somebody wins it and then never defends it. But seriously, on what fuckin planet does that happen ?

Conor huggers should be fucking embarrassed to cheer for a fraud like that. You guys must have it pretty rough in real life. Because only a TRUE beta would ever cheer for a sham like Conor.

Now go get your next customer his coffee. before your 15 year old boss with braces fires your ass.

When Brock Lesnar got a title shot with a 2-1 MMA record, 1-1 UFC record, and earning the shot by beating Heath Herring. That's when belts become meaningless...in 2008.

Belts have always been meaningless. I just want to watch good fights.
