Last Thursday night, I am driving from IL to the upper peninsula of Michigan for a snowmobile trip. They had a storm come through and got about 12-16" of snow last week.
There are 4 of us in my truck heading up. We get a block away from my house in Michigan, and are approaching a stop sign that sits on the top of a small hill. I slow down, and pull up to it check both ways and proceed. I pull into my alley, and a cop car lights me up.
He asks for my license, insurance, and registration. I give him my license and insurance, and tell the cop I don't know where the registration is. In Illinois they just run the plate and you don't need to show registration paperwork.
Cop leaves for a few minutes, and comes back to the truck. He says that they have a state grant to crack down on DUIs so this will be a DUI stop. They ask me where I am coming from, where I am going, why I am out of state etc.
They make me get outside during a snow storm (about 5* F) outside and perform a bunch of acrobatic feats. They shine a light in my eyes for a few minutes, ask me to watch their finger as they move it side to side in front of me etc.
They then ask me to blow. I ask them if I failed the sobriety test, but they won't give me a response. I ask them why I was pulled over, and they say because I didn't fully stop at the stop sign (I didn't). I ask them why I was under suspicion for DUI, and despite they said something about grant money when I was first pulled over they now said I smelled like alcohol.
I blow .00 and they let me go.
I am still pretty worked up out this. I feel violated, like this entire stop was BS due to some special funding the department got and that there was no probably cause.
Anyone else have something like this happen to them?
