I was always very good about not barking orders at someone already in crisis as it rarely works. Sometimes, people don’t always respond to please and thank you though, and you have to speak their language so they understand. And this wasn’t sending social workers on a call-it was at their facility.
With that said, officers now receive cit training to be able to spot someone in crisis-however, often it resembles drug use or they are both present-but I don’t agree with sending social workers on many calls because the mentally ill are, well, mentally ill and unpredictable and erratic. I am more in favor with sending social workers/mental health expert teams that include law enforcement for when things get too out of control.
