What counts as a takedown?

I'm guessing if they tried to define it more clearly we'd get something easily gamed like the current definition of a downed fighter.

True, though in NAGA (North American Grappling Association) BJJ scoring if you let the opponent up only to immediately take them down again, you don't get points for the second takedown. So that would prevent some B.S.

I still think not awarding takedowns in MMA would be good (except if it does damage). Or just consider it a slight advantage, a tie breaker if everything else is totally even. But whatever, I can respect the wrestling aspect of the game too.

i go by wrestlings rules

-have to establish control
-have to have a point on the ground besides palms of hands or soles of feet
-have to have a dominant position (sprawling into a front headlock and staying in front is not a takedown)

i often hear joe call takedowns when they fell into a switch or a neutral scramble but were underneat the other person

the rules were written by a team including wrestler(s) so it would be silly to assume thats not what they meant when they wrote "takedown"

Takedowns aren't weighted as heavily as people act. Usually a TD will win a round if the stand up is very close or non existent.

If you remove your opponent from his feet and a part of his torso or butt hits the ground it's a TD.

Now how heavily the judges weigh it will depend on control post takedown and positioning and the time spent there.

Butt and back on the ground, and preferably forced to use guard (or if the back is taken). That's a take down in my books.

If fighter A shoots and fighter B only has part of his ass cheek on the ground while he's using his hands and feet to successfully spring back up a few seconds after being brought to the ground, I don't count that as a take down.
