what are your thoughts on rener gracie?

He is impossible to listen to.

I took a seminar with some gracies. The helio 100 year celebration seminar to be exact. He was very serious during the seminar and paying attention to everyone and correcting everyones mistakes. Ryron was actually the one talking and cracking jokes most of the time. Both were cool dudes. Even their dad rorion approached me with a smile and extended hand. Gave him a handshake and told me thank you for coming.

I've never trained with him, but if I got the opportunity to I certainly would. He definitely has giant balls for competing against Andre Galvao and Josh Barnett and doing quite well while barely competing at all and teaching for most of his time. He is also very passionate about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Excuse me, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

However, I always remember Hillary Williams' post about Rener when he's mentioned: "Everytime I hear Rener talk I feel like I'm going to walk away having purchased a Ford Focus at full sticker price." Rener's constant sale of GJJ can get very annoying and he is hypocritical at times.

That's Ryron you're thinking of.

I've gone to a ton of seminars and none compare to Rener's. He may be the best instructor in the world. You can tell that his passion truly is teaching.

As a person, Between the huge amount of hypocrisy and delusion, marketing and hiding of facts (ie. helio vs kimura) and practically cashing in on rape to sell product I can't say I'm a fan.

Perhaps I'm being immature but I can't watch Ryper Gracie (let alone give him more hits on YouTube)

P.S. how did Machida look so damn terrible on the ground than he has in the past?

Extremely intelligent. He knows what he's selling and he sells it well. Not delusional by any stretch of the means, anyone who says he's delusional needs to go take a sales class.

I will hire him as a salesperson in an instant should he leave jiu jitsu.

machida did get rocked pretty bad before he got taped out in his excuse

I can't argue that.
By delusional, watch the helio kimura video. The amount of false information and excuse making is terrible.

Now if he's simply saying all of that to makes sales (which he does too well)

Then he's not delusional. I'd just find him morally reprehensible.

(I too would hire him in an instant to be a salesman)

Rener is a genius "spin master".

He's figured it out that the Helio side of the Gracie no longer have the best jiu jitsu. He was able to spin it so they're now the best jiu jitsu for self-defense.

Rener is well aware of the criticism, but he is sticking to his core marketing message. All the "facts" can be spinned to support his marketing message. For that, he's a true genius.

I may just be jealous. I've read "The Prince" by Machiavelli

Hell my biggest flaw as a teacher is my terrible lack of self promotion

His salesmanship and self-promotion is so extreme and gross to me that it's nearly vomit-inducing, but it's effective. I have absolutely none of that kind of hustle in me, and probably part of me resents people like that because that drive is what gets them to a level of success that I'll never reach.

As to the actual content though, he's an amazing teacher and his understanding of jiu jitsu is unquestionable. i've picked up a lot of details from his videos.

I can't stand sales people or heavy marketing in general but I find him fine to watch and enjoy his videos. It's almost like I can filter that stuff out and ignore it. He has a great enthusiasm for an art that he obviously loves with a great passion, I respect that and his teaching ability.

he tapped before josh even had the toehold locked.

Because both he and Josh knew that he had it. Josh could have easily cranked or held it on after the tap but you can see he was just applying steady pressure because he knew it was the end as Ryron had no way out. The position they were in left no wiggle room or any possibility of spinning out or kicking off the grip.

Ryron also said after the match that he heard a cracking sound so he tapped immediately. Toe holds are just one step down from heel hooks in terms of speed of injury vs. tap time. Or would you prefer he has to take off 3 months to heal for a fight that he stepped in last minute for against a guy who had 60+lbs on him?

I have met Rener a bunch of times. He is a really nice dude and way sincere. He is not quite as energetic as the videos but he is close and he genuinely loves teaching and interacting with people.

I have always found it strange the way people hate on their marketing. No one gives Coca Cola a hard time for suing Pepsi over the Cola name, nor do people complain that "low fat" foods are actually really high in sugar. They basically market themselves the same way every other massively successful company does.
