According to JJ, he embodies the spirit of martial arts, what it truly means to be a martial artist... that he'd give up an arm, an eye, a leg, but he would do that not to lose a fight... and so, there's nothing stopping him from coming round after round with his most malicious techniques. He said he aimed for Thiago Santos' knee because it's a malicious game. He was taught that he needs to be malicious in the fights. The fighters were trying to give him brain damage those nights, they were trying to take years of his life... so he sees it as a malicious thing, if the opponent gets limping for the rest of his life, ok, as long as it was able to prevent him from getting KO'd, that's fine to him.
He also uses a wrist control, strong wrist control technique to press against the cage and wear the opponent down. Sinc his reach is long, he mastered grabbing both wrists at the same time with strong positioning technique to make it hard for the opponent to free their hands... then using his long reach to throw elbows, kicks to the legs, fainting certain movements to hit with a spinning elbow... and he's very cautious defensively. He doesn't hesitate backing down and running a little farther in situations the opponents catch him in a blitz. He manages to avoid punches to the face with good front hand distance management and keeping the distance when the opponents rush too close to him, sometimes giving his back for a split second and then attacking again, with a high back kick or an elbow/punch. He switches stances a lot and has a lot of variation in combos, kicks from many positions, has a really varied combination combo.
