What are Derrick Lewis strenghts?

Is is obvious he wins often but can you define his strenghts during the fight?
Only i have is that he has a bigger chance to win by tko/ko during the third round, like his win over Alexander.
His strenght seems to be his weapon as well, the power of his hands.
Maybe also his way to fight offensive.
His weakness seems to be everything such as takedown defense and sub-defense.

Derek Lewis is a slow, ponderous, dumb ass.

His biggest strength is the ability to end the fight in one punch.

The only reason he beat Volkov was because Volkov was "an apologist," who kept trying to be "sportsmanlike," every time he fugged Lewis up.

If Volkov had a true killer instinct, and was a mean person, he would've knocked Lewis the fuck out. (Watch The Replay.)

There is nothing redeeming about Derek Lewis, other than power.

He's been subbed one time in 30 fights, I wouldn't say that's bad sub defence.

He has a wierd defence where he looks to be in a bad position but he's so damn big and strong he just decides he's getting up.

PS:
If I were Volkov's trainer/manager, I would rescind my contract and dump him. Any fighter who does not seize the moment, when they have the opportunity to finish, isn't worth two squirts of piss.

I have rooted against Volkov, ever since.

In any top 10 HW division that ever existed in MMA.

There is a reason p4p number 1 pride champ Fedor has a win vs a "contender" with a 0-2 record.

And no this wasnt rookie Fedor ... this was the champ Fedor fighting people with losing records and even some with zero wins.

Fedor was fighting about 4 or 5 times a year, you're lucky if guys like Stipe make it to the cage once a year now.

Fedor's had more fights than Stipe and Cain combined, it's not all gonna be top contenders with that output.

hits hard as shit on his right side (punch and kicks)
carries his power late into the fight
deceptively decent cardio/athleticism
very physically strong
patient in the striking and in bad grappling spots (it's funny to say "he just stands up LOL" but he does a good job of avoiding worst case scenarios and picking his spots to explode out)
solid first level TDD
heart / good chin

HW is a very physical and mental division, "Skill" is less relevant than ability here than any other division. Lewis isn't a super technically deep fighter, but he has a lot of those factors that aren't as easy to measure that make him a very good natural fighter.

He is embodiment of "Jujitsu is bullshit, like just stand up". The worst part is that he doesn't get subbed while doing it. Never puts his neck in danger, doesn't give up his back, just stands the hell up.
For real -- it kinda pisses me off haha

This is a good post, and bonus points for being a bit more objective than most folks that just say "heavyweight division sucks". I feel there's a lot of truth to it being a very mental division.

1.physically strong
2.hits very hard even by HW standards
3.decent speed for a guy with so much fat

other than that he really doesn't have much going for him but in the UFC HW all you need is big power and consider yourself ranked

He can put a little extra in his strikes, he strikes emotional but it works for him where for most it’s detrimental.

He’s really an impressive natural athlete, to me it’s obvious that he’s a little lazy in regards to his cardio and fitness but he still has unreal athleticism and explosiveness for his size. I see a lot of untapped potential and he’s just getting by on being a tough SOB with huge huge power. I mean he gets out of submission and bad spots all the time by just exploding, his defense is shit.

The guy did 3 years in the pen and got started late moonlighting as a truck driver, I think he could be so much better if he had a little more drive but he’s one of my favorite fighters to watch. Boxing tutelage under Foreman, probably why he’s so dangerous with the hands

Lewis knows the just stand up technique. Have no idea how that guy doesn't get subbed and taken down. He just powers and stands up. Then if you're standing with him he probably has better chin and power. Always fun fights.

Deceptive cardio. He always looks like he's about to die but somehow keeps going. Reminds me of Karo Parysian back in the day.

He’s tough as shit, strong as shit, and hits hard as shit.

Modern UFC HW that’s the only shit that matters lol - outside of DC, Stipe, and Blaydes there are no elite HW wrestlers.

-Heavy hands
-Toughness
-Fights better than his opponents when they are both gassed
-he's really fucking big, so it's exhausting just to fight him

I think that if everyone came into the Octagon with 0% gas tank, Lewis would be HW champion. Several of his biggest wins came when he honestly looked like he was about to die of exhaustion.
