What a difference in performance from Volk

It was a totally different fight right from the go, Volk looked out of his depth in there tonight

Like Islam said at the presser, "He was there only for the money." He got paid big bucks. Volk even admitted at the presser he was financially well compensated for taking this fight.

Still credit where it's due, no?

It was a beautiful kick. but I've been saying this since before the fight happened: It was a dumb ass fight, and the ufc sacrificed one of their best champs ever on short notice just to make a quick buck and please the oil sheiks with whom they have precious deals with.

It should have been gamrot in there and I've said this the whole time. I have no idea how people were acting like camps and preparation don't matter and expected this fight to be competitive like the first.

And yes, I am pretty bitter at the moment lol. Not with islam, but with the ufc. So many dumb ass decisions lately

He got headkicked, not ragdolled pillar to post for 5 rounds thus exposing his lack of prep/cardio

Fair enough and I admit I'm biased, but I think Islam would beat him with a full camp

I do agree it should have been gamrot
Anyway, we move on!

You're a good poster, there are only 3 guys I want to rub salt into, but they won't have the balls to post

Almost like he had surgery, 6 weeks of rehab, and 11 days notice to fly around the world to face a guy In the weight class above him.

This was a foregone conclusion.
Yes he didn't look sharp as usual and this is probably why. He did ultimately choose to accept this fight though so it's on him. But I do think a Volk who had been sparring and has that rhythm would do better. Coming off surgery sucks for your timing and mental sharpness.

Islam is special. He's finding a scary equilibrium between his striking and wrestling mixed with elite fight IQ.

He looked physically and mentally way out of fight shape … as it was logical given surgery and vacation, not fight camp.

In hindsight it was a really bad decision to accept the fight on short notice and under those circumstances, clearly he was overconfident and also the money was a factor.

Pity, would have been better all around to approach the rematch at a later date with proper preparation.

With a full camp, a fighter is in better shape. With a better shape, everything is better, including reflexes.

So it still probably mattered. Anyway, such a destruction is embarrassing, even on short notice, so no excuse.

Last time he shocked everybody my making it so close.

Today he looked out of place, as if it was only a matter of time before something big would land.
He was outwrestling Islam against the cage throughout that fight. Islam had to adjust by using the clinch. Volk was doing worse in the striking this time, but the wrestling was looking good. He just got caught with a headkick at range.

Hopefully goes back does some work at 145 and either commits to 155 properly or consolidates his position in his division..
Unfortunate because I don't think that happens like that with a full camp.

It's a terrible organization. They really only care about the bottom line because fight fans are stupid and will buy the hype and fighters don't have a union so it's the only real concern. It's a hard sport to be a fan of because the UFC loses more and more credibility each year.

That's why you spar for weeks on end and study your opponent. 11 days means your ill prepared for any wrinkles.

Ok but what about Usman then ? Here's the difference between good and great fighters.
Usman wasn't coming off a major surgery and birth of a kid. He also got dominated in his strength and had success in the striking only. The loss for Usman was more telling as his wrestling was his downfall. He used to be the best wrestler in his division where as this fight he was barely holding on in round 1,2.

Its not like 4 months of extra training prevents you from falling for a headkick set up.

If Volk gassed or something it would make sense to blame the short notice. But with such a fast finish I’m not really feeling it
To some extent I think many of feel similarly for sure, but for the sake of objectivity, 4 extra months of training do more than build cardio. It’s drilling techniques, sharpening your skills, prepping for specific strengths and weaknesses of your opponents, etc.

To be clear, It’s ENTIRELY possible he still eats that kick with the best camp possible and fight over, but the idea that, for example, incessantly drilling footwork patterns and defenses like recognizing particular strikes and defending effectively can’t be sharpened or fine-tuned in a way that makes a meaningful difference w months to prepare is too simple, especially when we’re talking about things like reflexes, muscle memory, distance control, footwork, etc.

Lotta factors, one of which is that Volk’s body type makes him particularly vulnerable to headkicks, so they’ll always be a smart strike to use whether he’s had a full camp or 1 day to prep, so Islam deserves serious credit for setting it up and making it happen beautifully
